When a family disagrees over an estate, who gets what?
Stephen Rono died in 1988 without a will, leaving two widows and nine children. The High Court gave his sons larger shares of his land than his daughters, partly on the reasoning that daughters could marry.
The Court of Appeal overturned that decision, holding that the Law of Succession Act, not customary law, governed the estate and that daughters could not be disadvantaged because of their s*x.
Today, this principle is firmly backed by the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.

Focus on the decisions that matter.
Focus on protecting what we’ve built.
Focus on taking intentional steps toward the future we envision.
As we step into October, may we make thoughtful decisions, embrace new opportunities and keep moving forward with purpose.
Here’s to a month of clarity, progress and meaningful growth.

Affordable Housing Levy: What does the latest Court of Appeal decision mean for you?

On 25 September 2026, the Court of Appeal delivered its judgment in the consolidated appeals challenging the Affordable Housing Act, 2024 and the Affordable Housing Levy.

The Court dismissed 42 consolidated appeals and upheld the Affordable Housing Act and the statutory framework supporting the Levy.

Under the current framework, an employee contributes 1.5% of gross salary, with the employer making a matching 1.5% contribution.

For employees and employers alike, the ruling has practical implications for payroll deductions, statutory obligations and compliance.

Our latest Legal Watch takes a closer look at the decision and what it means in practice.

Missing a court deadline can feel like the end of the road but Kenyan courts don't always see it that way.
A recent Court of Appeal ruling looked at whether a litigant who filed her appeal late should be allowed extra time, weighing her explanation for the delay against the evidence before the court.
The outcome offers useful insight into how "sufficient cause" is actually assessed in practice. We've broken down the ruling and what it means for anyone navigating litigation timelines — read the full article via the link.

A title certificate is not proof of ownership.

Kenya's courts have made this clear: a title is only prima facie evidence — not conclusive proof.

For agribusiness clients acquiring and leasing land for their operations, that gap is where real risk hides. We close it with root-of-title checks, encumbrance searches, and leases built to protect the growth you're planning for.
