The mess in Ukraine is primarily a result of attempts by the US and it's vasal states "allies" to integrate Ukraine and Georgia; countries very close to Russia, into NATO.
Russia finds this move provocative and tantamount to encirclement.
No great power can accept military forces of another big power stationed at its border.
The United States cannot claim that Ukraine is a sovereign state free to make choices of who it enters a military alliance with.
In 1962, the Soviet Union entered an agreement with Cuba to place nuclear missiles on that island. Washington responded by imposing a naval blockade on Cuba and insisting that the USSR pulls the missiles out or elseโฆ
The world came to the brink of a nuclear war.
Now, supposing that either China or Russia got into a military alliance with Mexico or Canada to deploy their forces in these two countries, I am certain that the US would aggressively oppose such a move.
Bottom-line, what is good for American security is also good for Russian security.
Has Putin under-estimated the devastating effects severe economic sanctions will have on the Russian economy or is he relying on a new accord with China in the areas of economic and security
concerns to mitigate those effects?
No, Mr. Putin has neither underestimated nor miscalculated.
He has correctly calculated that Russia will be able to withstand any sanctions with Chinese help, and that these sanctions will negatively impact Western economies as opposed to Russia.
- So, let's suppose Messrs. Joe Biden and Boris Johnson impose "super tough sanctions" on Russia.
These illustrious gentlemen are leaders of countries where they can't even convince people to wear masks to save the lives of their fellow citizens.
What chance do they have of getting their citizens to support any economic pain to help people in a country (Ukraine) most Americans have never heard about?
