The Supreme Court has modified its earlier ruling mandating three years of legal practice for candidates seeking direct recruitment as Civil Judges (Junior Division), introducing a transitional framework that will allow fresh law graduates to appear for judicial service examinations until March 31, 2027.

Apex Court Bench comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justice August George Masih and Justice K. Vinod Chandran held that practical exposure remains essential for entry-level judicial officers. However, the Court concluded that insisting on three years of Bar practice without an adequate transitional arrangement could cause hardship to law graduates who had planned their careers under the earlier eligibility regime.
