What Should You Put in a Will? Here’s What Really Matters

Thinking about writing your Will? You might be wondering what you’re actually supposed to include and what extras you can add to make sure everything’s covered.

Here’s what needs to go in:

🔑 Who you are - your full name, confirmation that this is your legal Will
🧑‍⚖️ Who you trust to carry out your wishes (your executors)
💷 Who you want to inherit your money, property, and possessions
✍️ Your signature and two witnesses (who aren't beneficiaries)

But a great Will goes beyond the basics. You can also include:

👶 Guardians for your children
🐶 Plans for your pets
⛪ Funeral wishes
🎁 Gifts to friends, charities or loved ones
🔐 Trusts to protect vulnerable people or young children
💬 Personal messages or notes of explanation to make things clearer later on

A Will should reflect your life and your wishes. I can help you get everything down in the right way, so your family aren’t left dealing with guesswork or a legal mess.

What Is Intestacy and Why Should You Care?

When someone dies without a Will, it’s called dying intestate. That means their estate and everything they own is distributed according to fixed legal rules, rather than their personal wishes.

Intestacy laws don’t take into account:

Who you’re closest to
Who you live with
Stepchildren or blended families
Promises or verbal agreements
Who needs support most

Instead, your estate is passed down in a strict legal order, starting with spouses or civil partners, then biological children, parents, siblings, and so on. If you’re not married or related by blood, you won’t inherit anything under these rules.

Here’s what that means in real life:

⚠️ Long-term partners are left with nothing
⚠️ Children from previous relationships may miss out
⚠️ Family disputes are more likely
⚠️ Your estate may take longer to sort out
⚠️ People you care about most could be left out

Having a Will in place puts you in control, not the law. It ensures your assets go to the right people, avoids confusion, and protects your loved ones during a very difficult time.

Who would your money, home and belongings go to if you died tomorrow?

If you don’t have a Will, you’re leaving it up to the law to decide. That’s called intestacy and it means your partner (if you're not married), stepchildren or close friends could get nothing.

Here’s why having a Will is one of the kindest, most important things you can do:

💛 You choose who inherits – Without a Will, the rules of intestacy take over. A Will puts you in control.
👶 Protect your children – You can name guardians and set up financial support for them.
💬 Avoid family conflict – Clear wishes reduce the chances of arguments, delays, or costly legal disputes.
📃 Say what you really want – From property to personal items, to funeral wishes, a Will makes sure nothing is left to chance.

A Will isn’t just about your estate. It’s a gift of peace of mind for your family.

🧩 Think Estate Planning Is Just About Making a Will? Think Again.

Most people believe estate planning starts and ends with a Will but that’s only one piece of the puzzle.

✅ Who will make decisions if you lose capacity?
✅ What happens to your home, savings, or business?
✅ Who gets what and when?
✅ How do you reduce stress and delays for your loved ones?

Estate planning is about so much more than just passing on your assets. It’s about protecting your future, your family, and your legacy.

We’ve broken it down in simple terms in our latest blog. Whether you’re just starting out or reviewing your plans this one’s for you.

💬 “I didn’t realise how important that LPA was… until we needed it.”
That’s something I hear often from families.

This blog from Honey Legal shares real-life stories of people who avoided chaos during a stroke, a diagnosis, or an accident because they had LPAs in place.

When you’ve got an LPA:
✔ Your loved ones can act immediately
✔ There’s no Court of Protection delay
✔ Decisions stay in the hands of people you trust

It’s a lifeline and not just a legal form.

🧠 These stories are a reminder that LPAs aren’t just for later in life. They’re for real life.

As a single parent, every decision you make is for your child’s future and that includes planning for the unexpected.

If something were to happen to you, who would care for your children? Who would make decisions on their behalf? Who would ensure they’re emotionally and financially protected?

Estate planning isn’t just about passing on what you own, it’s about making sure your child’s world stays safe and stable, even when you’re not there to guide them.

With a Will, you can:
✔ Name a guardian you trust
✔ Protect your child’s inheritance
✔ Leave clear, legal instructions for their care
✔ Prevent stress, confusion, or court delays for your loved ones

Being prepared is one of the most loving things you can do.

🧠 Who Would Make Decisions for You If You Couldn’t? (Consultant Version)

It’s not something we like to think about, but if an accident, illness, or condition like dementia meant you couldn’t make decisions anymore, who would step in?

Would it be someone you trust?

Would they be legally allowed to act on your behalf?

Without a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place, your loved ones could face long delays, legal barriers, or even be prevented from helping at all.

With an LPA, you stay in control by choosing someone you trust to make important decisions for you if you lose mental capacity in the future, about your health, care, finances, or property.

It’s not just for later life. It’s for anyone who wants to be prepared.

✔ Avoid stress and delays for your family
✔ Stay in control of future decisions
✔ Make your wishes clear and legally protected

📩 Message me today to find out more about setting up your LPAs.

🩺 What Is a Health & Welfare LPA?

A Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) lets you choose someone you trust to make personal decisions on your behalf if you’re unable to do so yourself.

This covers things like:
✔ Where you live and who cares for you
✔ Your daily routine, meals and medical needs
✔ Life-sustaining treatment decisions

It only comes into effect if you lose mental capacity, and gives your chosen person legal authority to speak up for you when you no longer can.

Without it, these decisions could be made by medical professionals or the local council, not your loved ones.

A Health & Welfare LPA gives you a voice in your care and future, even if you can’t speak for yourself.

📩 Message me today to find out how to get your LPA in place, it’s easier than you might think.

🧾 What Is a Property and Finance LPA?

A Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you choose someone you trust to manage your finances if you ever lose the ability to do so yourself.

This isn’t just for the elderly, illness or accidents can happen at any time. Having an LPA in place gives you peace of mind knowing someone you trust can:

✔ Pay your bills and manage your accounts
✔ Deal with pensions, benefits and investments
✔ Sell or maintain your property
✔ Make financial decisions on your behalf

You’re still in control unless you become unable to make decisions. But without this legal document, your loved ones would need to go through the courts, which is stressful, expensive, and slow.

This is about making life easier, not harder, when things get difficult.

📩 Message me on Facebook today if you want to protect your finances and plan ahead.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)?

Have you ever thought about what would happen if you couldn’t make decisions for yourself, maybe because of an accident, illness, or condition like dementia? It’s something we all hope never happens, yet planning ahead means you and your family can stay protected.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you appoint someone you trust to act on your behalf if you lose capacity, in other words, if you're no longer able to make important decisions for yourself.

There are two types of LPA, and they each cover different parts of life:

💳 Property & Financial Affairs LPA
This allows your chosen person (called your attorney) to manage your finances. They can help with things like:

Paying your bills

Managing bank accounts

Collecting pensions or benefits

Buying or selling property

Handling day-to-day money decisions

You can choose whether they act only if you lose capacity, or while you still have it (e.g. if you want help managing things).

❤️ Health & Welfare LPA
This comes into effect only if you lose capacity. It gives your attorney the power to make decisions about:

Your medical treatment

Life-sustaining care

Where you live and who cares for you

Your daily routine (meals, clothes, social care)

This LPA means your family won’t be left guessing or battling systems if something unexpected happens.

👉 You can only set up an LPA while you still have mental capacity, once that’s lost, it’s too late, and your loved ones would need to go through the courts (a long and expensive process).

LPAs aren’t just for the elderly, they’re for anyone who wants to be prepared and make life easier for the people they care about.

📩 Message me today if you’d like to explore getting your LPAs in place. I’ll make it simple and tailored to your needs.
