10 years in prison. 2 years waiting for the CCRC.

On 26 August 2016, Khobaib Hussain, Naweed Ali, Mohibur Rahman and Tahir Aziz were arrested in a counter-terrorism operation centred on a fake courier company.

Their convictions raise serious questions about police conduct, evidence, undercover officers and whether they received a fair trial.

The Birmingham Four remain imprisoned for life.

Their legal teams applied to the CCRC more than two years ago. On 17 May 2026, Khobaib’s lawyers made a further submission.

The CCRC must act.

APPEAL stands with the Birmingham Four and calls for:
• An urgent review and reopening of the case
• An independent investigation into West Midlands Police
• Their convictions to be quashed and the men released

10 years is too long. Justice delayed is justice denied.

If you haven't watched already, tune into Channel 4's 'The Accused: Beyond Reasonable Doubt', a four-part documentary series re-examining the cases of four people fighting convictions they believe are miscarriages of justice.

Episode 3, "Su***de or Murder?" tells the story of APPEAL's client, Eddie Gilfoyle, who was convicted in 1993 and has maintained his innocence for more than 30 years.

APPEAL shares the concerns raised by Harriet Wistrich and Centre for Women's Justice about proposals to increase the minimum sentencing starting point for domestic homicides. Although intended to tackle violence against women and girls, the proposal risks creating further injustice for victims of domestic abuse who kill their abuser. Women who act in the context of prolonged abuse, coercive control and trauma are already poorly served by the criminal justice system; increasing sentence starting points could entrench those injustices rather than address them. The proposal sits uneasily with the findings of Clare Wade KC's Domestic Homicide Sentencing Review. APPEAL supports a full examination of these issues through the Law Commission's ongoing review of domestic homicide.
