The 2026 World Cup kicks off on 11 June and runs until 19 July. With matches hosted across Canada, Mexico and the USA, UK kick-off times will range from 5pm all the way through to 5am. That means a wave of leave requests, a few bleary-eyed Monday mornings, and some conversations you need to be ready for.

Whether your team are passionate football fans or couldn’t care less, a major tournament affects the workplace. Leave requests cluster around fixtures. Sickness spikes after big games. And if you’re not consistent in how you handle requests, you can end up with grievances that have nothing to do with football and everything to do with fairness.
