Boy electrocuted and government do nothing.

Harvey Tyrrell was a bright, happy seven-year-old boy who loved football and spending time with his family. On 11 September 2018, while playing in the b**r garden of a pub in Romford with other children, Harvey tragically lost his life after being electrocuted by faulty outdoor lighting. The electrics at the pub were later found to have multiple serious defects, and what should have been a normal day out for a family ended in unimaginable tragedy. Harvey was rushed to hospital but sadly died about an hour later, leaving his family and community completely heartbroken.

In Harvey’s memory, there is now a petition calling for pubs and hospitality venues to be required to have regular electrical safety inspections. No family should ever have to go through what Harvey’s family has endured, and ensuring venues are properly checked could help prevent another completely avoidable death. I’ll place the link to the petition in the comments below – please take a moment to sign it and share it so we can push for better safety standards.

Local MPs have previously tried to push for changes like this, and efforts were made to raise the issue and introduce stronger safety requirements. Sadly, those attempts were ultimately ignored and nothing meaningful was implemented. In other words, the government simply weren’t interested. That’s exactly why public support for petitions like this matters — it forces the issue back into the spotlight and shows that people do care about preventing tragedies like this from happening again.

While I believe this petition is a good first step toward improving safety, especially in the electrical industry, I also believe it does not go far enough. I remain a firm believer that anyone carrying out electrical work should be required to hold a proper licence. At the moment the rules are a grey area, and the governing body schemes seem far more interested in filling their pockets than actually regulating the industry. It should be simple and black and white: if you have a licence, you can carry out electrical work. If you don’t, you can’t. And if someone chooses to do it anyway, they should face real consequences — including fines and possible jail time.

This poor boy’s life was taken before he ever had the chance to truly live it. If stronger rules, proper licensing, and real enforcement can stop even one family from experiencing that same loss, then it is something we should all be fighting for.
