We had a recent case where a subcontractor walked off-site three weeks into a job. No notice. No explanation, just took his tools and left (we assume he had a better offer elsewhere).

The business owner called expecting good news, but there wasn't much to give him because there was no written agreement in place. No notice clause. No clear position on who was liable for the work left incomplete, or the delay costs building up.

The thing that makes our eyes twitch is that this situation is completely avoidable, and it costs less to avoid it than most people think. A properly drafted subcontractor agreement covers notice periods, payment terms, what happens if work is left incomplete, and a non-solicitation clause so they cannot go directly to your clients afterwards - and that is before we get to the specifics of your trade.

Many still don't realise that from the 6th April 2026, Statutory Sick Pay changed.

If you employ staff and you haven't updated your absence policy or checked your payroll since then, there is a reasonable chance you are not handling it correctly.

Two things changed:

1 - the three waiting days are gone. SSP is now payable from day one of absence, not day four, and

2 - the lower earnings limit was removed, meaning employees who previously earned too little to qualify are now entitled to SSP.

For businesses in construction, catering, hospitality, and care sectors where short-term absence is common and a significant proportion of staff are on lower wages, this has a real financial impact.

More staff qualify. More absences trigger payment from day one. The cost adds up quickly if your processes aren't set up correctly.

What you should be doing right now:

1 - checking that your payroll is calculating SSP from day one, and
2 - make sure your sickness absence policy reflects the current rules.

If your contracts and policies haven't been reviewed since before April, now is the time to do it - not when you have an issue. Trust us, it is always cheaper to fix this before a problem arises than afterwards.
