One of the most common concerns I hear, particularly from people with children from a previous relationship, is:

“I want to make sure my partner is looked after if I die, but ultimately I want my children to inherit.”

Those two things don’t necessarily have to conflict.

A straightforward gift in a Will isn’t always the best answer. Depending on your circumstances, careful Will and trust planning can allow you to provide security for your partner while also putting protection around what you ultimately want to pass to your children.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. It depends on your family, your assets and what you actually want to achieve.

Estate planning is personal. The advice should be too.

I deal with people at all different stages of life, with very different families, finances and priorities. There isn't a standard answer that works for everybody.

My approach is pretty simple: understand what actually matters to you, explain the options clearly, and put the right planning in place without making the whole thing unnecessarily complicated.

Married? No Will? It might not work quite how you think.

Your husband, wife or civil partner does not necessarily inherit everything if you die without a Will.

The intestacy rules decide what happens instead.

One of the most common misconceptions I come across is that if something happened to you, your husband, wife, partner or children could simply step in and deal with everything for you.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t necessarily work like that.
A Lasting Power of Attorney lets you decide who you trust to make decisions for you if there ever comes a time when you can’t make them yourself.

And they’re certainly not just something to think about when you get older.

Estate planning is one of those things that's very easy to put off.

Not necessarily because it's complicated — usually because life gets in the way and there's always something more urgent to deal with.

So here are three simple things you can do today:

✓ Check whether your Will still reflects your wishes
✓ Think about who could act for you if you lost capacity
✓ Make sure important information and documents could actually be found if they were needed

None of those takes very long to think about. But leaving them until there's a problem can make things considerably more difficult for the people around you.

The biggest misconception I hear is this...

Everything will just go to my husband or wife.

Sometimes it does.
Sometimes it doesn't.

It's one of the most common assumptions I come across — and getting it wrong can have serious consequences for the people you care about.

What happens depends on your individual circumstances, how your assets are owned, your family situation, and whether you have a valid Will in place.

England are through... but only after putting the nation's blood pressure through the roof! 😅⚽

If you're anything like me, you've just spent 90+ minutes convinced you were about to have a heart attack.

It did get me thinking...

None of us knows when our final whistle will come.
