Most parents who feel something was wrong with their child’s NHS care never end up taking formal action. They are looking for understanding, not litigation, and the systems that should provide that understanding are often the hardest to navigate.

Knowing what a child was entitled to is not the same as preparing to challenge anyone. It is part of how parents make sense of what happened, and part of how care improves over time.

When parents ask questions about their child’s treatment, the answers should be available to them as a matter of course. That principle has to sit at the heart of any conversation about NHS accountability.

Jack was cycling to collect a laptop he had put in for repair when a refuse lorry turned left without warning, and he was tragically killed at the scene.

In the years since, his parents have been searching for answers from the police, the coroner’s court and Sevenoaks Council, but none have been sufficiently provided. The driver remains in post, and no changes to training, safety procedures or operational standards have been shared with the family.

Slater and Gordon has taken on the legal challenge against the council, pursuing accountability on the family’s behalf where it has not been delivered elsewhere.

Cyclist deaths involving heavy goods vehicles remain one of the most consistent and preventable patterns on UK roads, and while the standards and training exist to reduce these risks, accountability to ensure they are upheld too often falls short.

“Black women are being stereotyped as having high thresholds for pain. They're dismissed on the basis that they can deal with that pain.”

Nisha Sharma, our Principal Lawyer for Medical Negligence, was speaking on BBC Radio about racism in UK maternity care, now declared a national emergency by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Black women in the UK are more than twice as likely to die during or shortly after pregnancy than white women, and harmful assumptions like these play a significant role.

Every woman deserves to be listened to, believed, and treated as an individual, not through the lens of a harmful stereotype.

This year’s Action for Brain Injury Week, led by Headway, focuses on ‘isolation after a brain injury’, a quiet and often unspoken reality for survivors and their families.

Brain injury is often invisible, and the psychological impact it has on individuals is rarely acknowledged. Friendships can begin to drift without clear reason, work can become more difficult to manage, and home life often adapts around challenges that others may not fully understand.

More needs to be done by employers, the NHS and the wider public to better understand what life after brain injury really involves. Without that awareness, too many survivors are left carrying a greater share of the burden alone than they should.

Our industrial disease specialist, Simon Matthews, is seeing a growing number of claims linked to silica exposure, as cases of silicosis emerge far earlier than historically expected.

Containing up to 95% crystalline silica, the fabrication process can expose workers to dust linked to this severe and incurable disease.
