With the World Cup underway and celebrations in full swing, it is important we stay mindful on the roads. Major tournaments often bring an increase in drink and drug driving, making this one of the few road safety risks we can anticipate and get ahead of.

England and Wales still have the highest drink-drive limit in Europe, unchanged since 1967, and lowering it sits at the heart of the Government’s 2026 Road Safety Strategy. For now, it remains a proposal subject to consultation and Parliament. Until then, it is about shared responsibility across drivers, venues and enforcement, as attention turns to how future reforms can better support safer choices. Are millions of unmarried couples about to gain stronger rights?

Living together without being married is now a normal way to build a family, but the law still treats it very differently. Even after many years, cohabiting couples do not automatically have legal protection.

That may be about to change. A Ministry of Justice consultation launched on 5th June 2026 could introduce a new framework for cohabiting couples, where very few rights currently exist. It would mark a significant shift, though it would not place cohabitation on the same footing as marriage, and any changes are unlikely to take effect before 2028.

For now, the position remains the same, which is why understanding your rights early still matters.

Palliative care ensures that people in the final stages of life can live with dignity, comfort and care that reflects their individual needs. It goes beyond clinical treatment to support the emotional, practical and deeply personal needs of patients, as well as those of the families around them.

Slater and Gordon is partnering with The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, which supports more than 1,200 new patients, families and carers across Glasgow and East Renfrewshire each year. Through this partnership, we are helping to strengthen the hospice’s palliative care nursing team, experts who manage complex symptoms, guide families through incredibly difficult moments and provide vital psychological, social and emotional support.

As part of this commitment, Slater and Gordon will also deliver legal education sessions and clinics at the hospice, giving patients, carers and families clear, compassionate guidance on their legal rights at a time when clarity and reassurance matter most.

Most parents who feel something was wrong with their child’s NHS care never end up taking formal action. They are looking for understanding, not litigation, and the systems that should provide that understanding are often the hardest to navigate.

Knowing what a child was entitled to is not the same as preparing to challenge anyone. It is part of how parents make sense of what happened, and part of how care improves over time.

When parents ask questions about their child’s treatment, the answers should be available to them as a matter of course. That principle has to sit at the heart of any conversation about NHS accountability.
