That is what I believed.

I was wrong.

The Family Court can feel like a circus. 🤡

People walk through those doors believing that if they tell the truth, provide their evidence, remain reasonable and put their children first, the process will eventually sort fact from fiction.

But the reality people experience can be very different.

One hearing can feel completely disconnected from the next. Different judges. Different approaches. Different priorities. Months of delays.

Documents and evidence that somebody has spent weeks preparing can receive only minutes of attention. Important points can become buried beneath statements, allegations, position statements and arguments.

And perhaps one of the hardest lessons?

Being truthful isn’t the same thing as being properly prepared to prove what you’re saying.

Family Court is not a criminal trial. The procedure, evidential rules and decisions being made are different.

So if you are entering Family Court believing that simply being patient, reasonable and telling the truth will automatically be enough — prepare yourself differently.

Know your case.

Know your evidence.

Keep your documents organised.

Keep a clear chronology.

Separate facts from allegations.

Read every court order carefully.

Meet every deadline.

Record inconsistencies.

And above all, keep bringing the case back to what actually matters: the welfare of the child.

You cannot control what the other party says.

You cannot control who represents them.

You cannot control which judge you appear before.

But you can control how organised, evidenced and prepared your own case is.

Family Court should never feel like a circus.

⚖️ YOUR EX IS REFUSING COURT-ORDERED CONTACT — WHAT NOW?

Having a Child Arrangements Order doesn’t always mean everything suddenly becomes straightforward.

You may have gone through months of stress, paperwork and court hearings to get an order in place — only to find the other parent still isn’t following it.

❌ Contact repeatedly cancelled
❌ Children not made available at the agreed time
❌ Arrangements constantly changed
❌ Messages ignored
❌ A court order simply not being followed

A Child Arrangements Order is a court order.

If it isn’t being complied with, you may be able to apply to the Family Court to enforce the order using a C79 application. The court will consider what has happened and why before deciding what action, if any, should be taken.

Depending on the circumstances, the court has a range of options, which can include varying the existing arrangements, making an enforcement order involving unpaid work, or ordering compensation for certain financial losses. The child’s welfare remains central to decisions about their arrangements.

🚨 REPORTED DOMESTIC ABUSE TO THE POLICE? KNOW WHAT YOU CAN ASK FOR.

One of the most frustrating things I hear from people experiencing domestic abuse is:

“I reported it, but nothing happened.”

For somebody who has finally found the courage to speak up, hearing that a case is being closed or that “no further action” will be taken can be devastating.

But NFA does not mean you have to stop asking questions.

If you report domestic abuse, don’t be frightened to ask:

Has my allegation been recorded as a crime?
What is my crime/reference number?
Will you be taking a statement from me?
What evidence have you considered?
Has available body-worn video been retained?
What is happening next, and who is dealing with my case?
If no further action is being taken, why?

And importantly, if a decision is made that you don’t understand, ask for it to be explained to you.

Depending on the circumstances, victims may also have rights under the Victims’ Code, including receiving information about key decisions in their case. Certain police or CPS decisions may also be capable of review through a Victims’ Right to Review scheme.

Keep your own record too.

Domestic abuse isn’t always a black eye.

It can be coercive control. Financial abuse. Threats. Stalking. Harassment. Isolation. Intimidation. Monitoring your movements. Repeated unwanted contact. Or a pattern of behaviour that leaves somebody living in fear.

You are allowed to ask questions.
You are allowed to ask what is happening with your report.
And you are allowed to challenge a decision through the appropriate process where a review is available.

Knowledge doesn’t guarantee an outcome — but knowing the process can make it much harder to feel completely powerless within it.
