PUSH by Shoshana As a Doula, I support women and couples through pregnancy and birth. I aim to be a calming voice and presence to create a positive birth experience. Nonsense!

What is a Doula? A Doula is a person that supports women and couples through pregnancy and birth. At a time when midwives are often stretched running between various women giving birth, a Doula is a calming constant presence from beginning to end. She becomes the labouring woman's advocate and voice, and protects her from all surrounding noise and chaos at a time when she needs to focus most in a place of quiet and calm. A Doula also helps women believe that their bodies were designed for this task and they should therefore embrace birth rather than fear it. The more they relax into it, the more naturally the body will open up. What's critical is to help women/couples achieve the birth they want. Too many women still have the preconceived idea that if they don't have the perfect textbook natural birth, they have already failed as women and mothers. Our role is to support the mum's choice and help her to achieve a positive birthing experience so she looks back with pride and not horror! If it's an epidural she wants, that is her absolute prerogative to do so. A Doula is NOT a medical professional. I work in partnership with midwives and doctors and respect their medical knowledge and professionalism. A Doula is unable to perform examinations or any other clinical task. I help communicate with the medical staff to ensure my clients have all the information they need to make informed decisions throughout their labour.

Arnold Fibre Art - “FIGHTER - SURVIVOR
I’m reposting and sharing this impactful image and post from the brilliant artist Cassie Arnold who makes fantastic creations out of materials and who’s work I really like….. “October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. While I don’t know personally what it’s like to walk that journey, I have been a bystander to both my grandmother and great grandmother’s battle with the disease. As you spread awareness this month, please be sensitive to the real life humans that are fighting this cancer on a daily basis” We all know people fighting this dreadful disease - as well as other Cancers. Be kind - be sympathetic - be supportive - be loving - just be.

Mele - “Otium Domi” - ‘Peace at Home’. How many of you breastfeeding mothers can relate to this image? An exhausted looking woman breastfeeding her baby - the baby lying on a pillow for an easier positional latch and comfort - wearing her nightdress potentially all day - barely having time to shower/eat/breathe and go to the toilet! I absolutely love the colour contrasts and textures of this painting - the yellow checked fabric on the sofa contrasting her hair and white nightdress - the blue textured pillow with a different pattern - it all feels so incredibly genuine and lifelike which is what I love about it. Not made up or imagined but so true to life - you can literally feel her exhaustion and emotion from her blank stare screaming off the image

Ismayilova - “Mama Painting” - I really like the simplicity of this painting - a more contemporary take on the ‘Madonna + Child’. The childlike drawing of a silouhette of the mother in the background cradling her child as if still in her belly in the fetal position. A mother’s love and protection has no beginning, middle and end - it’s eternal and innate.

Ruscher - “The First Resort” - THE PLACE where it all happens! Periods and conception - the womb, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and cervix being the mechanical engine room for ovulation and menstruation - and then ultimately pregnancy and birth. How all the parts work together in synergy is breathtakingly miraculous. Each body part has its own unique function - and love the way this painting portrays each of them as colourful and joyful. There are even twin embryos illustrated as a result of this wonderful journey!

War Museum Archives - I came across this incredible photo and story titled “The Little Boy Who Carried His Baby Sister Across War” This photo was taken in Hungary, 1945, where after their parents were taken by the N***s, Aron - a 10 year old boy - strapped his baby sister to his back and walked 76 miles toward rumored safety. He bartered potatoes for milk and begged shelter from strangers. He said “I had no map. Just her breath on my neck.” Both miraculously survived. She later named her son Aron - “for the brother who gave me life twice”

Griggs - “Infinity Mommy Infinity” - this Canadian artist illustrates that never ending bond between mother and child whatever the age! That soul connecting, genetic imprint, emotional bond that entwines a mother to her child for a lifetime - whatever life circumstances may bring

MiLa Geometrica - “Every Day I Fed You” - this enormous art installation is a creation by the artist after breastfeeding her baby for three years. In the artists words “Three and a half years of breastfeeding.
The invisible architecture of care: a material archive of caregiving time”

Made up of bags used for breast milk storage after pumping, this incredible artwork shows the endless job of a mother maintaining a baby’s need to continually supply milk as a source of food, growth and immunity **le

Arakawa-Nash at the Japan Pavillion - “Grass Babies, Moon Babies” - this immersive artwork creates a journey activated by visitors through acts
of care and movement. Upon entering the Pavilion, visitors are invited to hold and carry one
of 208 baby dolls through the Pavilion’s pilotis, gardens, and interior spaces. Visitors
participate in a final act of collective care by changing the dolls’ diapers and activating a QR
code that delivers a “diaper poem” based on each baby’s assigned birthday. These birthdays
are shaped at the intersection of the artist’s intimate, personal experiences and the long arc
of historical and social forces within and beyond Japan

Kaplun - “The Gift Of Time/Family Life” - this painting really moves me with its delicacy and contradiction - the huge hands of the adult compared to the tiny feet of a newborn. The contrast of a life size person holding and cradling such a small baby. The artist has managed so beautifully to paint the intricacies of both the weathered hands and arms with the smooth unblemished feet - that portrays so simply the feelings of protection, love, support and nurture

Brandes “Conception” - an interesting take on the miracle of conception. If only it was as ‘simple’ and black + white as portrayed - the intricacy of the body’s need to weave all the parts together is so multi layered and multi faceted that it’s a miracle it actually happens every time! Liking the 9 squares for the 9 months - representing the different stages of growth
