We live in an anthropocentric age. To stop the depletion of natural resources we need to value them. But is value purely an intellectual concept? Or is it also an emotional one? How do we create a sense of value for urban audiences?

Vision is not our most emotional sense. Sensory, immersive storytelling can promote sustainable development - by allowing audiences to access the emotional, sensory value of natural resources.

Schematic of the sensory architecture created for . Visitors traversed through sensory environments that varied wildly: a hot, arid desert; a thick and verdant forest filled with luminous mushrooms and fantasy beasts that roamed the shadows; the shores of a lake as a storm broke over the water and washed the air with the heady scent of fresh rain.

Environments were triggered in real time in response to groups' movements through their fantasy worlds.

All of the bespoke scents contained at least one ingredient to encourage lucid dreaming.

Lucid dreaming is a type of dreaming in which the person is aware they are asleep, and sometimes has the ability to direct their dreams. Freed from the constraints of the physical world, but still with the sense of ‘realness’ that accompanies dreaming, the lure is to be able to direct events that you cannot achieve in life, which can include out of body experiences. Advocates say it helps them to be creative, or overcome mental hurdles. Devices and tinctures are sold with the promise that they will help you to reach a lucid dreaming state, and people practice alone or gather in sleep groups to try and achieve it. One of the most popular substances to consume is galantamine, which can be synthesised or isolated from some common flowers, including daffodils and snowdrops. The red spider lily, shown here, is another source. Galantamine is also medically prescribed to treat the symptoms of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.

This tech-forward immersive theatre production grew out of a new story, in which a benevolent AI seeks to save humanity from its own hubris by luring them in for a night of lucid dreaming. The promise is that you will emerge a better version of yourself: more successful, sexier, able to earn more, be more, do more. But what really is 'better'? Is the point of self-improvement really only for yourself? ⠀
⠀
What truly awaits visitors is a dark night of the soul in which they must make a choice between themselves and others. Powerful, motherly, but essentially non-human, this AI has good intentions but unconventional methods. With themes of sleep, dreams, fantasy and ambition, we developed scents and built systems to integrate sensory storytelling into this dark, fantastical world.
