Our founder and chief executive, David Haigh, was on GB News this morning with Cameron Walker and Olivia Utley, on the government's plan for early prisoner release.

His assessment was blunt: the scheme is a hopeless mess. Under earned progression, prisoners serving standard determinate sentences can be released automatically after a third of the term, down from between forty and fifty per cent now. R**e, serious child sexual offences and grooming offences are barred from the scheme.

People smugglers are not. Immigration offences and facilitating illegal entry appear nowhere on the exclusion list, so a smuggler serving an ordinary determinate sentence is in scope for release at a third, the same as a shoplifter.

The government has already reversed itself once on this, over the grooming gangs. With smugglers still not excluded, another U turn may be coming.
