Article: Why I Voted Yes in the Ballot and No to the Deal by Timothy Thomas

A No vote in the ballot is to reject the actions of counsel who took the brave decision to return their VHCCs briefs last year when the 30% cutswere confirmed not knowing whether the rest of the Bar would support them.

Day of Action: Save Legal Aid

1 Pump Court Criminal Team not available for criminal legal aid work on Friday 7thMarch.
Each member of the 1 Pump Court Criminal Team has individually decided they are not available for criminal legal aid work on Friday 7thMarch. Nor will they be available to accept returned work after this date.

1 Pump Court has consistently stated its opposition to the Ministry of Justice’s proposed reforms of Legal Aid. Following MOJ response to the consultation process on 27th February, our opposition remains strong.

1 Pump Court Chambers was founded on a commitment to fight fearlessly to secure access to justice for all. We believe that a functioning legal aid system is essential if that right is to be enforced for everyone.

In recent years legal aid has been subjected to piecemeal 'reform'. We want to ensure legal aid is secured for future generations as a system fit for purpose,

Our collective experience is that without access to legal aid, and without a legal aid system that retains excellence, miscarriages of justice for the vulnerable are not just a risk, they are a certainty. We are committed to providing the very best representation for all of our clients.
