Having your rights read to you before arrest is not something that many people savour the thought of. But the miscarriages of justices following having those read rights mistranslated is nothing short of an abomination. But that’s something that has happened on countless occasions in the US, where Spanish-speaking people upon arrest have been delivered a mistranslation of what their rights are. [ 257 more words ]

Google has recently published a paper entitled Google’s Neural Machine Translation System: Bridging the Gap Between Human and Machine Translation. The claims within the paper are bold, with the team behind the Google neural machine translation (GNMT) technology announcing that “in some cases human and GNMT translations are nearly indistinguishable” and that “our system’s translation quality approaches or surpasses all currently published results.” [ 304 more words ]

Translation technology. It’s improving all the time. But, even the most sophisticated of specimens are always prone to glaring errors. We’ve reported on the Magna Carta Translation News numerous times in recent months of the likes of Google Translate making a pig’s ear of translated wedding vows or, even more embarrassingly, translating the surname of Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to “sad little horse” [ 442 more words. ]

Endless reports of translation technology gaffes prove one thing for certain: when it comes to crucial law translations, you need a human translator.

A free translation service has been launched in Nagoya, Japan, to help ageing Chinese residents in the city gain access to nursing care. Many elderly Chinese residents are having trouble with Japan’s nursing care insurance system due to the language barrier and lack of knowledge of Japanese law. The head of the Tokai Daily Life Centre For Foreigners Wang Rong, 51, hopes that the newly created service will “help create a society where non-Japanese residents are given the same opportunities as Japanese citizens.” [ 261 more words. ]

One of the biggest challenges for machine translation is the richness, complexity and nuance of language itself. One of my favourite books in my younger years was Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, in which a Babelfish is inserted into the protagonist’s ear which translated alien tongues in outer space in real-time. Though I’m not nor have ever been a Trekkie, I am told that a similar device – a ‘Universal Translator’ – was available to the space travellers in… [ 320 more words. ]

Let’s be abundantly clear to begin with. Russia’s President Putin did not call Donald Trump a “genius”. There can be no doubt whatever about that. And yet the presumptive Republican candidate for the American presidency has been more than persistent – in fact, one could even describe his behaviour as insistent – to hold to the contrary. “So far we’re off to a good start,” Trump told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer in… [ 451 more words. ]

A new version of a Microsoft Translator API is to be released to add real-time speech translation capabilities to the existing text translation API. This means that businesses will have the ability to add speech translation capabilities to their own services, with the effect of bringing a better experience to their international customers. It’s certainly a landmark development for translation technology, being the first end-to-end speech translation solution to be optimised for real life and real-time conversations – currently available in eight languages and spoken in 18. The UK’s Sky News reported last week that it had received the “biggest Islamic State intelligence haul” ever, referring to its claimed receipt of a jihadist list with over “22,000 IS personnel files” from an embittered terrorist who had defected from the Islamic State ranks. The information was contained “on a memory stick stolen from the head of Islamic State’s internal security police.” It sounded like a journalist’s goldmine – “Tens of thousands of documents, containing names, addresses, telephone numbers and family contacts of Islamic State jihadis, have been obtained by Sky News,” the report ran.
