Cybersecurity specialists: your Global Talent endorsement was refused. What now?

After weeks of preparing documents and asking for letters, that decision can be difficult to read. Before rushing to submit again, look carefully at the refusal reasons alongside your original evidence.

Was evidence overlooked or assessed incorrectly? Or does your application need stronger support for your achievements and personal contribution?

That distinction matters.

• An endorsement review may be appropriate if you believe the decision contained an error. You normally have 28 calendar days to request it, and you cannot add new evidence.

• A fresh application may be worth considering if you need additional documents or evidence to address the gaps.

For cybersecurity work, explain your role clearly—even when projects are confidential. What did you develop, improve or lead? What results can you verify using material you’re authorised to disclose?

If you’re already in the UK, check your immigration expiry date too. An endorsement review does not extend your permission to stay.

You may need to ask a referee for more detail, explain exactly what you contributed to a team project or find something that verifies the results on your CV.

Give yourself time for those conversations.

As you review your documents, ask:

• Is my personal contribution clear?
• Can I support the results I’m describing?
• Do my letters explain my work with specific examples?
• Is it clear why I’ve included each document?

If you need records from a former employer, request material you’re authorised to use and disclose.

Finding a gap now gives you time to work out what to do next.

It’s understandable to start with your publications. They represent years of work. But the documents you need depend on how you’re applying.

There are four endorsement pathways for eligible academics and researchers:

• Academic or research appointment
• Individual fellowship
• Endorsed funder through UKRI
• Peer review

Each has its own requirements. An appointment, fellowship or funded research role needs to meet specific conditions. Peer review considers your research profile against separate criteria.

Gather your reviews, exhibition catalogues, artist credits and award records. Then ask: what does each document actually show?
