FAQ: What is the case against Tesco? The claim is that Tesco has been underpaying its store staff. Under the Equality Act, an employer is required to pay employees of different sexes the same amount if they do “work of equal value”. In this case, we say that the predominantly female store staff do work of equal value to the predominantly male distribution centre staff. Distribution centre staff are paid as much as £3 per hour more than store staff. We say Tesco is breaking the law.

Equal Pay Action: Join the shop workers' no-win, no-fee equal pay claim against Tesco, find out more about equal pay issues, and join the discussion.

FAQ: Why should I join?

Your reasons for joining will be personal, but there are three main reasons to join the claim:

(1) Compensation. You may be entitled to benefits including back pay for up to six years, as well as an improvement in your hourly rate of pay. How much you can claim will depend on things like how long you have worked for Tesco, but most claims will be worth several thousand pounds.

(2) Equality. Taking action is a step towards eradicating inequality in the workplace. Without it, employers’ attitudes are unlikely to change.

(3) Accountability. Bringing a claim holds the employers to account for choosing to reward men and women differently for work of equal value.

FAQ: I’m a man. Can I claim?

Yes, if the women are successful in their claims, it would be unfair if your pay were not adjusted as well. Your claim will be a ‘piggyback’ claim. You should register now so that we can issue your claim and maximise your claim period.

FAQ: Which jobs are included?

This current campaign is for all store workers who are currently paid at an hourly rate, or were paid at an hourly rate in the past 6 years. We are not bringing claims for store managers.

You cannot claim if you work in a distribution centre (unless you have worked in a store!)

FAQ: Will I be disciplined if I claim?

If you feel that you are being treated differently by your employer as a result of your claim, please contact us immediately.

FAQ: Will I get a pay-out even if I don’t join?

That depends on Tesco. However, only those Tesco store workers who took part in the case will be entitled to compensation for back pay. This could be worth tens of thousands of pounds.
