The next HEAT (Hostile Environment Awareness Training) course in Nairobi will take place from 7–10 September 2026.
Designed for professionals who may work or travel in remote, volatile or high-risk environments, the course is particularly relevant to media and production teams, journalists, humanitarian and NGO personnel, consultants, security professionals and organisations operating in challenging environments.

The training combines practical, scenario-based exercises with classroom learning, covering:
• Situational awareness and personal security
• Risk assessment, planning and preparation
• Kidnap and ransom awareness
• Checkpoint negotiations and civil unrest
• Weapons, IED and drone threat awareness
• Vehicle safety and defensive mobility
• First aid and trauma response
• Psychosocial care and resilience
• Digital security
• Working safely with fixers and sources

Through realistic simulations and practical exercises, participants develop and practise skills that can be applied in real-world situations, underpinned by a strong “Do No Harm” approach.

The course is Highfield accredited, and participants receive an Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) upon completion.
