When parents separate, disagreements about taking a child abroad can become particularly sensitive. A parent may want to travel for a holiday, visit relatives or relocate, while the other parent may have concerns about the trip, the child's welfare or the possibility that the child may not be returned.
Parents should not assume that they can simply take a child abroad because they are the child's parent. Depending on the circumstances, consent from another person with parental responsibility or legal authority may be required. Taking a child out of the UK without the necessary consent or authority can have serious legal consequences.
If you are considering travelling abroad with your child and the other parent does not agree, or if you are concerned about the other parent taking your child abroad, obtaining legal advice before making arrangements can help you understand your position and the options available.
