In criminal proceedings, what you say matters, but so does what you choose not to say.

When preparing mitigation for a client, solicitors may encounter allegations involving other people who are not in a position to respond.

Professional conduct requires careful judgment.

Where possible, adverse comments about third parties should be avoided, and their identity should not be disclosed unnecessarily in open court.

At J Benson Solicitors, our approach to criminal and prison law is built on careful case management, sound legal strategy and protecting our clients’ interests while maintaining the professional standards expected of the legal profession.

Every case requires its own strategy.

But one principle remains important:
Advocacy is not about saying everything you can. It is about saying what is necessary, relevant and appropriate.

Access to justice isn't just about having laws, courts, and solicitors.

It's about whether people can confidently find the right legal support when they need it.

Every week, we speak to people who have spent hours searching online, reading conflicting information, and trying to work out whether they even have a legal issue in the first place.

Some delay seeking advice because they are unsure where to start.

Others assume legal help is out of reach.

By the time they speak to a solicitor, the situation has often become more stressful, more urgent, and sometimes more costly to resolve.

At J Bensons Solicitors Ltd, we believe legal services should be accessible, understandable, and centred around people.

Whether someone is facing a housing issue, family dispute, criminal investigation, immigration matter, property transaction, civil litigation claim, or probate issue, the first step should not feel overwhelming.

That's why we are committed to providing clear guidance, specialist expertise, and a personal approach tailored to every client's circumstances.

Because access to justice doesn't begin in a courtroom.

It begins the moment someone realises they need help and knows where to turn for trusted advice.

P.S. What is the biggest challenge people face when trying to access legal support today?

Solicitor, accountant or financial adviser: who do you actually need?

When planning for the future, managing an estate or dealing with a loved one's affairs, understanding which professional to approach can save time and prevent complications.

Solicitors advise on legal matters such as Wills, Powers of Attorney, Probate, estate administration and disputes, while accountants and financial advisers support tax, financial planning and investments within their areas of expertise.

In many situations, you may need more than one professional, working together to protect your interests.

At J Benson Solicitors, we provide clear, professional guidance on the legal aspects of your circumstances, helping you understand your options and take action with confidence.

Getting the right legal advice early can make a meaningful difference when it matters most.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in nearly three decades of practising law is that legal advice is often sought too late.

Families may wait until a loved one can no longer manage their affairs, make decisions, deal with finances or handle important legal matters before asking what can be done.

But planning ahead can make difficult situations much easier to navigate.

Wills, Probate and Powers of Attorney are some of the areas where early legal advice can help protect people’s interests and give families greater clarity when it matters.

At J Benson Solicitors, we understand that these conversations can be sensitive, which is why clear and compassionate advice matters.

After 28+ years in practice, I’ve seen how much difference it can make when families put the right legal arrangements in place before a crisis arises.

Sometimes, the best time to deal with an important legal matter is before it becomes urgent.

It’s lovely to see so many people starting exciting new chapters in their careers.

After many years in the profession, my advice is simple: ask questions, learn from your mistakes, build genuine relationships and never assume you should know everything.

Keep learning, stay curious and don’t be afraid to start before you feel completely ready.

Whatever your next chapter looks like, believe in your ability to grow into it.

One of the biggest misconceptions about being a solicitor is that our job is to know the law.

It isn't.

The real responsibility is helping people make important decisions when the stakes are high.

A family wondering what happens to their children.

An employee trying to protect their future.

A business owner facing a dispute that could affect everything they've built.

Or someone who needs to understand where they stand before taking the next step.

After more than 30 years in practice, I've learned that every legal matter is personal to the person living it.

Behind every document is a life, a family, a business, or a future that deserves careful attention.

The law gives us the framework.

Our responsibility is to combine that knowledge with sound judgment, clear advice, and genuine care for the people who place their trust in us.

That trust is something I have never taken for granted.

In your experience, what's the most important quality you look for in a professional when the decisions matter?

09/09/2026

Two things I’m increasingly seeing in conveyancing that can cause unnecessary delays: late file sign-offs and poor communication.

I’ve seen transactions where enquiries were resolved weeks earlier, only for additional compliance documents to be requested just before exchange.

Compliance is essential, but these checks should happen early enough to avoid holding up an entire chain.

I’m also seeing situations where one solicitor becomes unresponsive, leaving agents, brokers, solicitors and even their own client chasing for updates.

Good conveyancing is not just about completing the legal work; it’s about communication, anticipation and keeping matters moving.

Have you experienced unnecessary delays when buying or selling a property?
