🎉What a feeling! A bill banning genetic discrimination in life insurance passed the Senate today and will now become law.

This is what nearly a decade of relentless advocacy looks like. Australia has just passed a landmark reform - a national ban on genetic discrimination in life insurance - and it will change lives.

For years, too many Australians have faced an impossible choice: Understand their genetic risk… or protect their future access to insurance.
No one should have to make that decision.
Now, that barrier is finally being removed.

Behind this moment are years of dedication from researchers, advocates, and people with lived experience - including leaders like Dr Jane Tiller, Prof Paul Lacaze and our own Krystal Barter. It’s also driven by voices like Mia from Team Humanise Health - who discovered she carries a BRCA2 gene variant, took proactive steps to protect her health, and is now standing up so others can access the same life-changing information without fear.

The progress in Parliament has been strengthened by the support of Dr Mike Freelander, who has championed the bill from the outset, as well as Assistant Treasurer Dr Daniel Mulino MP. This is bigger than policy.

It’s about shifting power back to people - giving Australians the ability to understand their health, act early, and make informed decisions without financial consequences hanging over them.
We’re incredibly proud to have stood alongside this work for so many years 💛

🩷 We were honoured to support on this momentous international initiative, helping to bring it to life through strategic direction, visual design, communications, content capture, and production support on the ground at the Australian High Commission in London.

At the heart of this event was the launch of a joint pledge between BCNA, (UK) and (Canada), who united in a shared commitment to drive global change for people living with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), who remain severely underrepresented in data, policy, and support.

A standout moment for our team was writing the Community Promise, which became a profound and emotional element of this collaboration. It reflects our belief that patients must be at the centre of everything written, created or committed on their behalf.

On the ground, was our Head of Digital & Community, Katie—who lives with MBC—representing both Humanise Health and BCNA. Her professional expertise and powerful patient advocacy are a clear example of why this pledge matters: people living with MBC are capable, active contributors who deserve to be seen, counted and supported.

This project represents the kind of impact we strive for: thoughtful, meaningful, and led by those it affects most. We’re so proud of this milestone and eager for what comes next.

👋 MEET JAIME

In August 2024, Jaime discovered a lump in her breast. At just 27, with no family history, she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer: grade 3, aggressive, 35mm.

Before treatment even began, she and her husband were thrust into IVF. Kids were something they’d planned for later, but chemo threatened that future. With government support, they quickly froze embryos; juggling scans, needles, and decisions no one should have to make while still in shock.

She completed 6 months of chemo by March 2025, followed by a bilateral mastectomy. Surgery revealed unexpected lymph node involvement, meaning radiation would be next. Through it all, Jaime advocated hard for a dual surgical team, choosing a hospital that offered both breast and plastic surgeons. A hard fight, but one she’s proud of.

Mentally, cancer is a warzone. Her psychologist compared it to living in a hostage situation, and that analogy clicked. Jaime found peace in taking things day by day, using mindfulness, and leaning into community. Cancer Chicks Australia, in particular, helped her prepare emotionally and practically.

Her husband has been her anchor; through cancelled plans, appointments, tears, and shaved heads. Her family also showed up in every way, with rides, meals, and moments of joy. Some friends pulled away, but others leaned in through simple check-ins and honest conversations that meant everything.

Jaime’s still in it, but her strength is undeniable. Advocacy, love, and community are carrying her forward—one day at a time💕

📰 HEALTH NEWS: $5.8M in Funding for Cancer Research
Cancer Council NSW this week announced over $5.8 million in new funding to support cutting-edge cancer research across prevention, treatment, and survivorship.

Among some of the projects were those dedicated to tackling treatment-resistant HER2-positive breast cancer, advancing liquid biopsies for early detection, and exploring novel dual-targeting combination therapies.

We believe in the power of research to shift what’s possible, and we’ll be watching closely as this research begins to shape the future of cancer care in Australia.

💰The newly released federal budget has brought some significant shifts for healthcare in Australia — and while there are some meaningful wins for patients, it’s clear that a few critical gaps remain.

✅ On the plus side, there’s welcome news for accessibility: - Medicare will receive a much-needed $8.5B injection, aimed at increasing access to bulk-billed GP visits.
- PBS prescription prices are also set to drop by 20%, with a new cap of $25 starting next year — a huge relief for people managing chronic conditions.
- Urgent Care Clinics are expanding to 87 nationwide, providing faster, more accessible care outside of emergency departments.
- Women’s health is getting long-overdue investment — over $160M for reproductive care, menopause support, and more.

⚠️ But not everything adds up:
- Preventive health has again been left on the sidelines — with no significant new investment in keeping people well before they need more intensive care.
- Regional and rural communities still face major challenges, with no clear plan to address longstanding access issues or workforce shortages outside the cities.
- Mental health services, already under pressure, received limited new funding that doesn’t reflect the scale of current need.
- Aged care reforms remain underfunded, raising concerns about the quality and sustainability of services as demand continues to grow.

We believe healthcare policy should always centre the people who rely on it — so we’re keeping a close eye on where this funding takes us, and where we still need to push for better.
