Great Leaders in History - Winston Churchill

The origins of today’s European Union can be found in the years following the Second World War. The two wars were devastating for Europe, and there was a determination after the war not to return to the European rivalries of old. With this in mind, the leaders of the major European powers began contemplating ways of ensuring that wars such that had been seen in Europe in the first half of the 20th century could not happen again. One of those leaders was erstwhile Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill.

Images and sentiments of Winston Churchill are often used as exemplars of British independence and sovereignty. Yet, in the years immediately following the Second World War, Churchill was one of the keenest advocates of reuniting ‘the European family’.

In a speech in Zurich in 1946 (after he ceased being Prime Minister in 1945 and before he returned to office in 1951) Churchill spoke of the need to build ‘a kind of United States of Europe’.

When Churchill backed a "United States of Europe"

The former British prime minister, Winston Churchill, comes out in favor of a "United States of Europe" in a speech at Zurich University, Switzerland, to make sure there is not another war. Though Britain stayed out of the formation of the European Economic Community when it launched in 1957, it soon had second thoughts and eventually joined in 1973.
