During Pride Month, many organisations rightly focus on inclusion and visibility, but it’s also important to remember that this is about everyday experiences at work too. However, for both employers and employees, LGBTQ+ inclusion can also fundamentally become a workplace rights issue.

In practice, one area where issues often arise is workplace “banter”.

Comments about someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity are sometimes intended as “jokes”, but they don’t always feel that way to others.

If comments or behaviour make someone feel uncomfortable, excluded or upset, this can cross the line, even if no offence was intended.

This might include things like repeated jokes, off-hand remarks, or situations where someone feels left out or singled out because of who they are.

For employers, it’s not just about having policies in place, it’s about creating a culture where people feel respected and safe to speak up, and where concerns are taken seriously.

For employees, it’s important to know that you don’t have to simply put up with behaviour that makes you feel uncomfortable at work.

If you are unsure about your situation, taking early advice can help you understand your options.

At Judge & Priestley, our Employment team supports both employers and employees with workplace concerns, from policies through to resolving disputes. If you have a question about the topics covered in this post or any other aspect of Employment Law, please contact Karen South (Litigation & Employment Senior Solicitor) on [email protected].

Judge & Priestley were delighted to sponsor the inaugural Women of the City event, held at IFX Payments’ fantastic new offices.

Representing Judge & Priestley on the evening were Rachel Addai, Partner – Solicitor in our J&P Credit Solutions team, and Jennifer Alderman, Partner in our Private Client team.

It was inspiring to see so many women from across the industry, all at different stages of their career journeys, and to share personal and professional experiences in such a relaxed, informal and insightful setting.

A huge thank you to all the speakers for sharing their experiences and perspectives, and to Bea Khoshaba from Rainstone Money Group for organising such a brilliant initiative.

We were proud to support an event that created space for connection, conversation and encouragement.

This week marks one year since Judge & Priestley merged with central London firm Portner Solicitors, a significant milestone in our continued growth across London and the South East.

When the merger took effect on 1 June 2025, the Portner team joined J&P, bringing with them a strong reputation in high-value residential and commercial property, company/commercial work and dispute resolution. The merger also marked J&P’s return to the central London legal marketplace and took the firm to around 300 people, with a combined turnover in excess of £25 million.

One year on, our London team has continued to grow and we are delighted to now be based in our new, modern and spacious office at 7–10 Chandos Street, just a few steps away from the previous Portner location.

This anniversary is a chance to thank our colleagues, clients and professional contacts for their continued support throughout an exciting first year together.

We look forward to building on this strong foundation as we continue to provide a broader range of legal services to clients across London and beyond.

Pride Month is an opportunity to reflect on why visibility, representation and allyship matter not just in June, but every day.

We asked colleagues across Judge & Priestley why Pride Month is important to them.

Thank you to our colleagues for sharing such thoughtful reflections and helping us continue the conversation around inclusion, belonging and allyship.

We’re delighted to share this lovely feedback for Louise Hyland, Partner, Kavitha Rajah, Partner, and Temi Ogunniyi-Adeleke, Paralegal, in our Residential Conveyancing team, following a recent sale and purchase matter.

Buying and selling a home can be a stressful process, so it is always rewarding to hear when our team has provided clear, supportive and informative guidance from start to finish.

Well done to Louise, Kavitha and Temi for delivering such a fantastic client experience.

Unpaid energy bills can create serious risks for small businesses, particularly those that rely heavily on gas and electricity to operate.

In her latest article, Pauline Manaka, Registered Foreign Lawyer in our Credit Solutions Litigation team, looks at when energy suppliers may be entitled to disconnect supply, the legal process they must follow, and why businesses should engage early if arrears arise.
