Really pleased to have received my Stage 1 certificate from the Social Care Institute for Excellence for the Safeguarding Adult Review programme.

Alongside this, we’ve had detailed portfolio feedback and that’s probably been the most valuable part. The focus on applying theory in real systems, and recognising both what good systems analysis can uncover and where things can go wrong, really landed.

I’m already seeing the impact of this in my consultancy work and leading SARs. The learning is strengthening how I approach systems thinking, reflection and challenge in practice.

A big nod to the rest of the cohort too. Completing this alongside demanding roles is no small thing.

Next step is the recall session later this year, building towards a second portfolio and accreditation. Looking forward to reflecting on how this learning continues to hold up in real-world reviews.

After delivering a practice learning session linked to a Safeguarding Adult Review today, I spent some time in the place where the man at the centre of the review had lived.

Standing there brought a different kind of connection to the case.

Safeguarding Adult Reviews can easily become timelines, chronologies and recommendations. But at the heart of every review is a person. A life lived in a particular community, in a particular place.

Moments like this remind me why reflective practice matters so much in safeguarding. Our work isn’t just about processes or procedures; it’s about understanding the human story behind them and asking what we need to do differently.

Learning from reviews matters most when it stays connected to the real lives behind the reports.

I’ve just submitted my Stage 1 portfolio of the SCIE Safeguarding Adults Review Reviewer Programme, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect.

This programme has genuinely shifted how I think about safeguarding reviews. From focusing on learning events to understanding the systems, pressures, and contexts behind them. It has deepened my approach to:

🔹 Systems thinking & Key Practice Episodes

🔹 Reducing hindsight bias

🔹 Meaningfully involving practitioners, families and seldom‑heard voices

🔹 Identifying structural barriers, inequality and intersectionality

🔹 Facilitating psychologically safe learning environments

🔹 Crafting evidence‑based findings that can drive real system change

I’m grateful for the challenge, the honesty and the richness of learning the programme has offered. It has strengthened my confidence, curiosity and commitment to reviews that are fair, reflective and capable of improving safeguarding practice.

Thank you to SCIE, the facilitators and my cohort for such thoughtful conversations and shared learning.

On to the next stage and to reviews that honour lived experience and support real cultural change.

It was an honour to attend the 'Starting with the Survivo' Conference, as part of Modern Slavery Week of Action. This important event brings together partners, professionals, and most importantly survivors, to strengthen our collective response to modern slavery and exploitation.

I was privileged to have a spot to showcase Oldham’s multi-agency policy and procedures, sharing how our local partnership approach works in practice. Collaboration across services is at the heart of protecting and supporting victims, and it was inspiring to hear from others across the region who are equally committed to this work.

One of the most powerful moments of the day was experiencing the ‘Life Through a Lens’ exhibition. A stunning and moving collection of photography created by survivors. Each image tells a story of resilience and hope, capturing places that represent freedom, safety, and new beginnings.

This week is a reminder of how vital it is to keep survivor voices at the centre of everything we do. Together, through partnership and compassion, we can continue to build pathways to freedom.

🕯️ | Honouring Shafilea Ahmed and All Victims of Honour-Based Abuse

Today, on what would have been Shafilea Ahmed’s 39th birthday, we pause to remember her and all those lost to honour-based abuse. At just 17, Shafilea's life was tragically taken for asserting her right to choose her own future.

This day is a powerful reminder of the ongoing need to challenge and end honour-based violence in all its forms.

No one should suffer in silence. If you or someone you know is affected, please know there is support available even beyond the police. 💛

| Today, on Day of Memory 2025, we remember all those lost to honour-based abuse.

The awareness day takes place on 14 July each year on what should have been Shafilea Ahmed’s 39th birthday. Shafilea was tragically murdered by her parents when she was just 17-years-old for refusing a marriage.

Today serves as a poignant reminder of all those lost to honour-based abuse.

We are committed to tackling this abhorrent crime and encourage anyone suffering to reach out. If you do not feel comfortable speaking to the police, there are other organisations that can help: https://www.gmp.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/honour-based-abuse/honour-based-abuse/

I've recently had the privilege of supporting Bolton Community Kitchen to develop a safeguarding policy tailored to their unique environment and ethos.

Community organisations like theirs are often led by passion, values, and a deep commitment to care. Safeguarding frameworks must reflect that. This wasn’t about simply meeting statutory requirements. It was about creating a policy that made sense to volunteers, respected the people they serve, and embedded safeguarding into everyday practice.

We worked together to ensure the language was clear and accessible, roles were defined, and the procedures supported their wider mission. The outcome? A document they could genuinely use, not just file away.

Safeguarding is not about bureaucracy. It’s about culture. It’s about enabling safe, trusted spaces where people can thrive.

If your agency, community organisation or charity needs support with safeguarding, whether that’s policy development, training, or advice, I’d be happy to chat.
