From Human Evolution to the Evolution of Work
I was very inspired by Professor Alice Roberts who spoke on “The power of difference. What human evolution teaches us about thriving today,” Alice is a Biological Anthropologist, Author and Broadcaster and her talk was genuinely thought-provoking.
The talk explored human evolution not as a neat, straight line of progress, but as a complex story of adaptation, movement, diversity, overlap, experimentation and survival.
From early hominins, walking on two feet, the Laetoli footprints, human family trees and the familiar “march of progress” imagery, one message stood out clearly: progress has never been simple or linear.
Human evolution was shaped by difference. Different species, different environments, different ways of moving, surviving, cooperating and responding to change.
That feels highly relevant to the world of work today.
We are now living through another major evolutionary shift. Not biological this time, but technological. AI is no longer something sitting on the edge of work. It is becoming part of communication, recruitment, learning, analysis, decision-making, service delivery, risk management and everyday business operations.
The lesson from evolution is not that we survive by staying the same.
We move forward by adapting.
• For organisations, this means AI should not simply be treated as a trend, a threat or a standalone tool. It needs to be understood, governed, integrated and used responsibly.
• For leaders, it means preparing people properly, with clarity, training, ethical boundaries and confidence.
• For employees, it means developing curiosity, judgement and adaptability as a baseline.
• For HR, it means helping organisations evolve in a way that keeps people, culture, fairness and accountability at the centre.
The evolution of work is already happening.
The real question is whether we are preparing our people and organisations to thrive through it.
