With deep sorrow and respect, I mourn the passing of Late Learned Advocate Sopon Kumar Das Ray, a senior member of Sunamganj District Bar Association. He was a polite, gentle, and learned person.
My practice as an advocate was for a short time (January 2019 to September 2021) before I came to the UK for higher studies. But I have been coming to court since 2016 as an apprentice. From those days, I observed him from a distance, his presence, his way of walking, and his style of argument and submission. He truly showed what a good advocate should be.
When I worked as a junior lawyer under Learned Advocate Md. Shamsuddin, we were often on the opposite side in cases where he appeared. Watching both of them argue in the same case was always impressive, and I truly enjoyed seeing them in court. However, as a junior working mostly in the lower courts, I did not get the chance to face him directly, as he usually appeared in the higher courts and came to the lower courts only for urgent matters.
His presence in court was strong, and his behavior was always respectful. His contribution to the legal profession was great. His passing is a big loss for our Bar and for society.
He will be greatly missed.
May his soul rest in peace.
