πŸ“ Community Legal Awareness at PRB Flats, Lagilagi Housing

On Friday, 6 March 2026, teams from the Legal Aid Commission’s Family Unit, Civil Unit, Conflict Unit, and Criminal Unit visited the PRB Flats at Gaji Road, Lagilagi Housing to conduct an engaging community legal awareness session πŸ€βš–οΈ.

During the session, the team shared important information about laws affecting families, children, and community safety πŸ“šπŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦. Residents were given the opportunity to better understand their rights and responsibilities under the law, while also raising concerns affecting their community.

One of the key questions raised by a parent was how they can discipline children who loiter after hours πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈπŸŒ™. With laws protecting children from physical harm, parents were concerned about how to guide their children without facing legal consequences. The Legal Aid team provided helpful guidance on positive and lawful ways to discipline children, highlighting the importance of communication, supervision, and parental responsibility ❀️.

Residents also paid close attention to the Civil Unit’s presentation, showing great interest in the topics discussed πŸ“–. The session was both Insightful and educational, encouraging open dialogue and strengthening community awareness about the law.

The Legal Aid Commission remains committed to bringing legal awareness closer to communities and empowering citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions βš–οΈβœ¨.

Empowering Our Youth & Strengthening Community Awareness πŸ“˜βš–οΈ

The Legal Aid Commission team recently conducted an awareness program at Vunivaivai Village, engaging with the youth of the community on their rights, responsibilities, and access to justice.
During the session, an elder of the village raised an important question regarding Village By-Laws. Our team provided guidance on the proper legal processes for addressing such matters, helping to clarify misconceptions and encouraging lawful and united community action to prevent crime within the village.

The discussion was both insightful and collaborative, reinforcing the importance of working together β€” elders, youth, and community leaders β€” to build safer and more informed communities.
We remain committed to reaching communities across Fiji and ensuring access to justice for all.

βš–οΈ Strengthening Justice Through Collaboration 🀝
The Legal Aid Commission was honoured to be invited to share the Defence perspective on First Hour Procedure, and other key investigation principles with the Fiji Police Force during their Investigators Empowerment Workshop.

Our Legal Aid lawyers collaborated with investigators at Nakasi Police Station and the Police Academy, contributing to meaningful discussions aimed at upholding due process, fairness, and the rule of law.

We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate in building a stronger, more informed justice system for all.

πŸ• What Is the First Hour Procedure?

Did you know that the Legal Aid Commission provides legal help 24 hours a day, every day?
This service makes sure that anyone arrested or detained is told about their legal rights within the first hour of arriving at a police station.

Under the Fijian Constitution 2013, Legal Aid Act 1996, and UNCAT, everyone has the right to:

Know why they are being held

Remain silent or speak with a lawyer

Ask for a family member to visit

Not be forced to confess

Be told how long they can be detained and what happens next (interview, charges, bail etc.)

🌟 Why It Matters

The First Hour Procedure:

Protects your rights and the police as well

Makes sure medical checks are done early

Helps police focus on real evidence β€” not forced confessions

Shows respect for human dignity and fairness

Builds better trust between the police and the public

Promotes transparency and awareness of our justice system

πŸ”Ή Your Rights Matter.
If you or someone you know is detained, ask for Legal Aid within the first hour.
We are here for you β€” around the clock, every day.
