After the media presentation, we continue advancing in the scientific organization of IWEMM12.

The program is structured into six major sessions that reflect the breadth and depth of the mycorrhizal field:

➡️ Biodiversity, ecology, evolution, genetics and genomics – understanding how edible mycorrhizal fungi are organized and adapt across landscapes, and how genomics is reshaping our knowledge.

➡️ Mycosilviculture, forest management, climate change and resilience – exploring how management practices and adaptive strategies sustain fungal productivity under changing climatic conditions.

➡️ Citizen science, conservation and international cooperation – highlighting the role of communities, networks and collaborative platforms in data generation and resource governance.

➡️ Cultural ecosystem services – examining mycotourism, biocultural heritage and the links between fungi, territory and rural development.

➡️ Mycotechnologies, agri‑food and health – focusing on technological and biotechnological applications of mycorrhizal fungi in food, agriculture and well‑being.

➡️ Truffle cultivation and cultivation of other edible mycorrhizal fungi – presenting advances in plantation design, physiology, soil management and production models adapted to climate change.

We are finalizing the registration system, which will open soon.

Thank you for the interest and support of the scientific and professional community.

Today we presented the IWEMM12 in Teruel, Spain, the upcoming edition of the world’s leading international meeting dedicated to edible mycorrhizal mushrooms and their sustainable management.

From 12–17 April 2027, Teruel will become the global capital of mycology, bringing together scientists, institutions and companies from more than 28 countries to address biodiversity, climate change, mycosilviculture, mycotourism, biotechnology and the cultivation of mycorrhizal mushrooms.

This edition strengthens global cooperation and connects science, innovation and territory.

Thank you to all the institutions and teams making this international event possible.

🌱 EMI turns a European mountain forest into an open-air mycology lab.

The European Mycological Institute (EMI) has led a new edition of its international training program in the Montes de Urbión, a high‑mountain forest region in Northern Spain (Europe) known for its exceptional fungal diversity and sustainable forest management.

36 students from across Spain completed their autumn field practice in the Urbión Mycological Forest, working with 230+ fresh fungal species and developing professional skills in identification, risk assessment and sustainable mycotourism.

This training is part of the EMI Mycological Guides Course (200h + field practice), an accredited European program that has already trained 100+ professional mycological guides, now working in museums, interpretation centres, rural lodgings, active tourism companies and municipal mycological services — helping create new job opportunities in rural territories.

EMI also leads one of Europe’s most active fungal citizen‑science groups, contributing 4,236 observations and 987 identified species to international biodiversity platforms.

Public conferences in Quintanar de la Sierra (Northern Spain) reinforced EMI’s role as a European leader in mycological education, rural innovation and forest‑based development.

Have you heard of the Kamouraska Mycological Park in Québec, Canada 🇨🇦?

Today at the European Mycological Institute 🇪🇺, we celebrate a special milestone: the first anniversary of Kamouraska’s entry into the international Fungi Friendly Forest (FFF) network. One year of innovation, sustainability, and territorial leadership in the responsible valorization of wild mushrooms.

Kamouraska is a territory that inspires: modern management, regenerative vision, and a strong commitment to long‑term sustainable development.

If your territory is moving toward a contemporary mycological model, we encourage you to speak with your territorial managers, local actors, and political leaders to support its adhesion to the FFF network.

More information: https://eumi.eu/fungi-friendly/

International cooperation is essential to share solutions, strategies, and knowledge among territories and to address adaptation to global change.

Adapting Mycology to Global Change 🌱🌏
🇪🇺🇯🇵🇨🇦🇺🇸🇦🇺

This week, the European Mycological Institute (EMI) held its 18th General Assembly, gathering members and collaborators from the European Union, Japan, Canada, the United States, and Australia.

The Assembly’s key milestone was the adaptation of the management and valorization model of mycological resources to global change.

As an international reference in sustainable mycology, EMI will continue strengthening knowledge exchange, global co‑creation, and local entrepreneurship training. 🍄🌍

🌱🌍 Adapting Mycology to Global Change

Media outlets are highlighting EMI’s message: global change is making wild mushroom production increasingly irregular and altering species phenology and distribution.

This shows the vulnerability of traditional harvesting models and the need for high‑value experiences such as mycogastronomy, guided learning, heritage interpretation and specialized events linked to w**e tourism, health and nature.

To ensure quality and authenticity, EMI stresses the importance of transforming local products and promoting the cultivation of wild edible mushrooms, following the example of truffle farming.

Living Labs will be essential to drive co‑creation and innovation in rural economies. 🍄🤝 Trufforum

🌱 Field excursions at IWEMM12

They will be one of the pillars of the congress: direct contact with the territory, observation of mycorrhizal ecosystems, and hands‑on scientific learning.

Thanks to the pre‑registration, we are fine‑tuning the program so these activities align with the interests you are sharing with us.

If you haven’t completed the pre‑registration yet, there’s still time. Your input helps us shape the congress and adjust the content.

🌿 A scientific article that has become highly relevant again in 2026.

“Drought‑induced changes in the phenology, productivity and diversity of fungi in Spain” (2015), authored by members of the EMI Scientific Committee, is now a key reference for understanding how climate change is reshaping wild mushroom production.

The study analyzed nearly twenty years of ecological data from Pinar Grande, a large pine forest located in Soria, north‑central Spain, showing that increasing drought delays mushroom emergence, reduces productivity and decreases diversity — especially in high‑value species such as Boletus edulis and Lactarius spp.

In today’s drier and more irregular climate, this work highlights the need for long‑term ecological monitoring and adaptive forest management strategies to protect mycological ecosystems.
