So in early May I went back to the UK for a few days to see my son in Manchester & my Mum in Northumberland. Leaving David with responsibility for the house, finca, dog and cat.
My mistake? Leaving him alone with Manolo and a tractor!
Although we had discussed plans for the site of the huerto, the size of the huerto and the plants we wanted to grow... between the 2 of them they managed to get up to mischief, ploughing half the field at the back of the house and putting in "about" 60 or 70 potato plants, plus various other crops.

I wasn´t sure whether to laugh or cry when I saw the first photos of the churned up plot. Just as well he waited until I was out the country! Happily, with a bit of TLC and a lot more work, it is finally starting to look like a real market garden, and we have added lettuces, peppers, onions and some other vegetable to the collection. Not sure what we will do with all those potatoes though!

The weather is a bit changeable at the moment but the first elderflowers have appeared and in sunny spots are ready to pick.
I´m trialling a small batch of elderflower "champagne" and today went looking for some of the creamy flowers.
When foraging, collect from areas away from roads and pollution and only take what you need, avoiding picking everything from the same spot. My trial batch needed just a few heads of flowers as I´m starting a 2 litre batch to see how it goes.
You can see in the photos what the flowers look like and they have a distinctive sweet floral smell. If you are not sure, use one of the plant identifying apps or books to make certain you pick the right stems.
I left the plants on paper towels for a while, just to encourage a few bugs to leave home. At the moment the flowers are steeping in a sugary, lemony, ye**ty mix before fermentation starts.
If it all goes well, I´ll be scaling up the operation by the end of the month when more trees come into bloom.
If successful, then I´ll share my recipe so watch this space!

One thing we never considered when moving to Galicia was to check out areas of seismic activity. Turns out our area of " Montañas de Lugo" has moderate activity and several fault lines.
Saturday 25 th April we had 16 tremors in 15 minutes as a quake of 3,8 on the Richter scale occurred in Tricastela. Strong enough to be felt as far away as Monforte de Lemos and Chantada but deep enough that there was no real structural damage reported.

David was awake and said the vibrations and noise were scary and he felt the house jump up twice and was on the point of evacuating us all! Yours truly slept through it all and the first I knew was when I read our neighbourhood WhatsApp group chat in the morning.
Apparently between 2 and 3 am it was quite a display of mother nature's power .

Speaking to locals later that day, the last big quake was in 1993 which was 5,7 on the scale. Big enough to do some damage to homes .
One more thing to think about, although with a frequency of every 30 odd years, I'm not going to worry about it.
Interesting link here though to see that there is frequent seismic activity all over Spain every day
We just don't notice most of it. And for the sleepyheads like me, that's probably the best way!
I'll just carry on planting up my vegetables and hope that the dog sized plant at the front door doesn't need too much watering.

I´ve been really busy with work recently, sorting out paperwork, digital signatures and other procedures for clients all over Spain.
Finally got a week off at Easter and went back to the UK to see family. After paying 17 pounds for a pint of beer and a large wine in the pub, I´m definitely sticking to our 2 euros a glass bar in Samos!!

Spring is here, the wood burner has finally been put to rest for this year and we have started on the larger huerto.
Our kind and ever useful neighbour has ploughed a large strip of our land and David is in the process of planting some trial crops.
So far, lettuces, cabbage, onions and 60 potatoes.

I´m sticking to my courgettes as they were a great success last year and the crop seemed to go on for ever. It was around March that we finally stopped making courgette soup with last year´s frozen harvest!

There´s also tension in the village as a Lothario has 2 women fighting over him. Not as exciting as it sounds... Milo has gone from being terrified of Molly the enormous Mastín from the farm to being her best buddy. She comes on almost every walk with us and has almost moved into our house. Working in the office one day, I heard a noise on the landing and there were the troublesome twosome, watching me tapping away at the computer.

But things have taken an unexpected turn with the arrival of a lovely brindle Border collie, passed to our neighbour last week.
Molly is guarding her "novio" ferociously and any attempt to get the 3 of them together ends in barking, snarling and chaos.
We think Milo could be introduced to her on his own with little problem, but at every turn, Molly is there.. shoving in between and asserting her rights over the canine Casanova. She must weigh 50kg so I quite understand the reluctance to take her on!!

Patience is in order to introduce them properly, but for now poor pretty Vinnie (and yes she´s a girl!) has been given the cold shoulder by the Estraxiz Two.

February was a very busy month for my translation and "tramites" business, with hundreds of clients with rental properties having to file a new N2 report with the property registry throughout the whole of Spain.
Today is the deadline, last submissions made and time to relax and catch up a bit with what has been going on outside of my office before I disappear under those piles of paperwork!

Despite working every day, I managed to get a few breaks in when the sun came out. A lovely hike with friends in the sunshine and a quick trip to Portomarin with the dog last Sunday.

Poor Milo has had his op now and is walking about with his large collar (the cone of shame) wondering where his manly bits have gone!🤣 Luckily for him the collar comes off tomorrow and he can run loose in the finca again, instead of having to go everywhere supervised and on his lead. His friend Molly the mastin hasn´t been allowed in to see him, she´s just too big and rough until his stitches are well healed.

After working every weekend, David and I are planning to take a day trip mid week with a picnic. In Galicia when the sun shines it´s down tools and head out.
And with the warmth comes the motivation to get outside and start to clear the land in preparation for a larger huerto this year. Exactly how, where & what to plant, we still have to decide and I´m not making the same mistake of planting more than 3 courgette plants, given that we only recently made soup with the last of 2025´s frozen harvest.
I´m looking forward to recovering my slower pace of life after a frenetic February!

Weather wise it´s a bit of an alphabet soup at the moment!! Not even at the end of January and we are already at L for the named storms🥲. When it isn´t raining, it´s either snowing or we have an amber alert for wind!!!
Never mind, in about 4 weeks things will start to improve... SURELY...
So David and I were very lucky to get a fairly sunny overnight stay in A Coruña, courtesy of my lovely sons. As Xmas presents go it was very thoughtful and we stayed in a modern hotel near a commercial centre, just a short hop from town on the bus.
If you haven´t been there then the Tower of Hercules is recommended (over 200 steps to the top, take it slowly!) and the old quarter is fantastic.
We managed to find a craft beer bar to test the ales and visited the castle by the sea on the first day. Admittedly, the weather was changeable. When we went up the Tower of Hercules, it was sunny... and when I arrived at the top about 20 minutes later it was pouring down. brrrrr... excellent views though.

We plan to explore more once the weather gets better but for now, I´m off to make a loaf and hug the cocina de leña in the kitchen.

Very chilly up here at the moment but finally the snow has cleared.
Yesterday we made the most of a break in the snow and rain to walk another stretch of the Camino heading ut from Sarria.
A lovely route took us past the Monasterio de la Magdalena and under the motorway before passing up into the hills and meadows.
In Springtime this is going to be fabulous.
Milo still not good around other people or dogs, so today we are starting his training with a vet from Sarria who is an animal behaviourist specialist.
Although he is the perfect house dog, good with family, clean and good (at last!) with the cat, he was never socialised as a puppy due to repeated moving around andre-homing. Fingers crossed my smart puppy can improve so we can walk him without worrying about aggression.
This week we are on property visits, now that the snow is gone and the festivities are over.
The photos are of the lovely Monastery, now an albergue on the outskirts of Sarria.

Happy New Year to our clients and followers!!
We look forward to sharing more of our journey with you but for this week I´m relaxing with family as my two sons are here from Cartagena and Manchester to enjoy the New Year with us.
It´s getting very cold at the moment and a blast of polar air and snow is heading our way for the 7th January.
Although back in the office after 3 Kings, property visits will be dependent on driving conditions for the next couple of weeks as today is cloudy and heavy fog.
Would I swap it for the southern sun again?? No, but David does keep asking me when the sun might make an appearance as he adapts to life permanently up here in Galicia.
Hope you all had a lovely New Year and I´m off to make yet more chestnut stuffing today, from the frozen supply off our trees.

Wishing everyone a very happy Christmas, from cold and snowy Samos.
I made the typically British Xmas cake and David and I walked around to all the neighbours to offer a slice, as they have all been sooooo good to me this year. More boxes of fruit and vegetables on the doorstep than you could imagine.
In true Gallego style, each house we visited with the cake gave us more stuff to take home so we arrived laden with tomatoes and vegetables, eggs and home made chorizo.
Luckily our 4th neighbour only wanted to toast with home made cherry liqueur!
Have a wonderful festive season, wherever you are and we look forward to helping more of you discover true Galician campo life in 2026.
Felices fiestas y Boa Nadal.

We will be off to start our monthly round of property checks this week, with a dry break in the weather forecast for the middle of the week.
We have welcomed another new client in the Monforte area for our annual package of monthly checks, so there´s another property owner who will have peace of mind in their absence and can call on us to help solve any problems they may encounter.

Whilst we will be taking a break over the Xmas period and Three Kings, 2026 is looking like a very busy year and we are now considering expanding the range of services due to David´s permanent relocation (yeeha, best present ever). Whilst I´m great at many things, I rule out chopping off my leg with a chainsaw or falling out a tree, whilst his family have managed fincas of woodland near Ponferrada for decades.
So garden maintenance is now available, with pruning and removal of wood / waste if not required for compost.
We have also been considering pet sitting... but if any of you have any other needs then feel free to post the ideas here as we are very flexible.
Hoping that you are enjoying the National fiestas! Take care, wherever you are. I´m off to walk that adorable dog again!
Liz

I know I've been a bit silent the last week....but the fault lies with a handsome, black haired man with beautiful eyes.
No, not David 😂 , he's missing the hair...although he finally arrives this evening, after closing the last remaining business in Murcia on 30th November.
Say hello to Milo.
After collection, we spent an energetic first week walking the Camino and playing fetch followed by sleepless nights and the "will he, won't he" game of 💩 hunting on the landing.
It's like having kids all over again and I'm well past that age.
Thankfully he's very intelligent and happy to obey for a measly bit of kibble.
And a bilingual dog who can "leave the cat" or "deja el gato tranquilo" . I'm impressed 👍
It took him a while to recover from the stress of the change of location, handler, feeding and routine but we are getting there, with clean nights, happy days and tons of fussing.
And looking at that face, I'd say it's definitely worth it.

OK so looking at the photos below, you can see what a week it has been, weather-wise! Raining cats and dogs, in this case literally!
So the exciting news is we are in the PRE adoption phase for the 6 month old puppy who I went to check out in Orense last Saturday.
The poor dog had been abandoned in Cádiz along with siblings, adopted from the pound by a family who then decided after 6 weeks that they didn't want him 😡and then sent back to a dog charity in Orense.
Needless to say, yours truly took one look at that face online and it was love at first sight ( without so much as a glass of wine). Hopefully we will get the adoption approved and be able to bring him home soon. Watch this space...
The cat will NOT be impressed but she has lived with dogs in the past so I´m sure she will adapt. There she is proving how smart she is by finding the warmest part of the kitchen marble.
And as for the poor shrub, the strong winds have rendered it horizontal. David thinks it looks like a bonsai, but my poor lavender will need some support if we are ever going to get it upright again.

With the rain and winds I haven´t been out and about so much, but at least it gave me time to get a sourdough starter made and another batch of cider. I can´t wait to try the cider, the bottled stuff is looking very clear and the second batch is fermenting away in the kitchen. Ahhhhh, rural life!
