It is with sadness, that I found out this morning, erupted forcing an emergency evacuation. I hike this mountain in 2018 and stared into the core of the earth watching the bubbling lava boil rock. My prayers go out to the people of .

“The government in the Democratic Republic of Congo has launched an evacuation plan for the eastern city of Goma after a large volcano erupted.
Fountains of high lava burst from the Mount Nyiragongo into the night sky forming a thick orange cloud over Goma, which has a population of two million.
Thousands of panic-stricken residents were fleeing, many on foot.
The volcano, located 10km (six miles) from Goma, last erupted in 2002 killing 250 people and making 120,000 homeless.”

After hiking in the thick on the African Congo forest, our ranger stopped us, told us to put our masks on and baam... I came face-to-face, only a few meters in front of, a huge silverback gorilla names Humba.

"Findings show populations in the Virunga Massif have grown to 604 (census taken in 2016) individuals, up from 480 individuals in 2010. This puts the total global wild gorilla population over 1,000 individuals" WWF 2016.

I had the incredible opportunity of visiting these magnificent animals in 2018 - and experience no words, photo's or video could ever do justice to. But here is a little snippet of some baby gorillas playing around.

Please consider supporting the work of the people fighting to protect these gorillas. It is nothing short of a conservation war.

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said that no (thats ZERO) rhino were poached in Kenya in 2020!!! The first time since 1999. Elephant poaching reduced from 350 lives lost five years ago, to 11 in 2020, which is the lowest recorded yearly total!

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has said that no rhino were poached in Kenya in 2020 – the first time since 1999.

Last year I visited the infamous crocodile farm just outside of Bangkok on assignment with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) to review the welfare of some of the animals. So many reasons not to support these types of zoos and the exploitation of wildlife through animal tourism. There were a number of endangered species here too - there always is. Please do your research before going to these places and make choices that do not support poor animal welfare and or exploitation of these poor animals.

I will be featuring my photographs from this assignment on my IG account this week.

It was with great sadness that I learned in January this year that little Mompane, the baby orphaned ele, being cared for at Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre passed away from a sudden illness. The staff tried all they could but his health was too fragile and sadly he did not make it.

It is very hard to care for baby elephants, they require 24/7 care. Here is a short video memoir to Mompane. RIP.

Despite this sad news, their good work continues -Check out HERD - Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development to see their recently adopted baby in South Africa's FIRST Elephant orphanage.

Snake wine, beating snake heart, snake bile, snake meat … snake farms in Vietnam offer many forms of snake meat to local and international tourists. Many of the snakes on the menu are endangered, and have been poached from the wild. This is illegal and in eating at these restaurants you are not only fulling the demand but supporting the illegal wildlife trade.

The conditions of the snakes are often atrocious; most of the snakes we saw had sores on their noses from hitting the glass, many were in glass containers flooded with water, their scales were rotting and they were in a lot of pain. Many of these restaurants also served other wildlife like civets, porcupines, turtles to name a few.

What about the health and safety side of things. Did you know in consuming this wine (not all bacteria is killed when the snakes are fermented), snake/other wildlife or RAW meat can expose you to a number of zoonotic and bacterial diseases like botulism, salmonella etc.

Simone Magnino, lead author of a study about snake meat consumption and a researcher for the World Health Organization (WHO) when talking about diseases present in snake meat said, "The clearest microbiological risk comes from the possible presence of pathogenic bacteria, especially Salmonella, and also Shigella, Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterolitica, Campylobacter, Clostridium, and Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause illnesses of varying degrees of severity."

HUGE thank you to my good friend Thanh for your help with this one. You are an inspiration!
