Murphy Battista LLP offices will be closed on Monday, September 30, 2024, to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We acknowledge the history and generational trauma caused by Canada’s residential schools. We also re-commit to supporting the necessary ongoing work of reconciliation by continuing to learn the history, seeking to understand the impact of residential schools, and participating in ongoing reconciliation efforts.

We are delighted to share that Angela Bespflug has again been named one of Canada’s "Top 100 Women in Litigation" for 2024.

Angela's unwavering commitment to justice throughout her career is truly commendable. This past year, her work advocating for Canada's disabled veterans and RCMP officers resulted in a court-approved settlement of $817 million. Along with our colleague Janelle O'Connor, she is also leading a separate class proceeding to rectify the alleged improper clawback of disability pensions. In addition, Angela continues to work on cases that leverage class action litigation to address systemic wrongs against Indigenous people relating to child welfare, health, and racism.

Congratulations, Angela. Your perseverance and determination to do what is right for our clients are always front and centre, and the recognition is well-deserved!

MB is delighted to be a sponsor of the 8th Annual “Golf for Julia” tournament – a full day of fun and philanthropy, held on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at the Sunset Ranch Golf Club in Kelowna. The day starts with a friendly 18 Hole Texas Scramble with plenty of fun on the course, followed by a delicious dinner and the exciting Silent Auction (August 18 – 25, check out the prizes here: https://www.32auctions.com/organizations/68229/auctions/166306?r=1&t=all). There are still tickets available for Golf foursomes and the post-tournament Dinner. Click to Register here: https://golfforjulia.com/register-to-play/

Julia sustained a spinal cord injury at 17 months. Since then, her family has committed themselves to helping Julia achieve her goal to walk again. This requires attending rehabilitation programs tailored to her growth and development designed to keep her strong and progressing in her recovery. Not all of these programs are available in Canada, and while some of the costs are covered, many are not.

The annual golf tournament and silent auction are not just events, they are lifelines for Julia. They raise funds for her ongoing rehabilitation, making a significant impact on her life. All proceeds from the event and auction go directly toward Julia’s specialized therapies in the US as well as custom equipment she needs as she grows. This October, Julia and her Mom will be spending 4 weeks at a very special facility in Louisville Kentucky where she’ll participate in 3 hours of OT/PT daily. Julia will also be playing sled hockey, wheelchair basketball and swimming while in Louisville.

For the past eight years, golfers, sponsors (including MB!), volunteers, friends, and family have come together to raise funds to support Julia’s journey to walk again. The support of the Kelowna community has been instrumental in Julia’s progress, and we are proud to be part of a community that has shown such unwavering support for Julia’s cause.

We are delighted to share that our colleague Angela Bespflug was named Plaintiff Litigator of the Year last night at the 2024 Benchmark Litigation Canada Awards. This is the third time Benchmark has acknowledged the excellence of Angela's work, which has made a significant difference in the lives of our clients. She is relentless in the pursuit of doing what's right for people who might not otherwise see justice. A tenacious, forever idealist (her words and an apt description), it's great to see her dedication to people who need a champion to fight for their rights recognized in the litigation community.

It's been a busy year so far. Angela was a key player on the legal team that pushed for justice in a class proceeding on behalf of Canada's disabled veterans and RCMP officers. The result was a settlement and court approval of a substantial award ($817M) that will help rectify a miscalculation of disability benefit payments. In addition, she continues to work on cases that include several distinct class proceedings addressing wrongs against Indigenous people relating to child welfare, health and racism and a class proceeding to address an alleged improper clawback of disability pensions, to name a few. The remainder of 2024 is shaping up to be another good year for justice, and we applaud Angela's relentless optimism and perseverance in getting fantastic results for clients. Congratulations, Angela, the recognition is very well deserved!
