A lot of students know what IRAC is, but struggle to actually use it under exam pressure. It ends up either too rigid or too messy, and marks get lost in the structure.

What worked for us during the NCA exams was treating IRAC as a thinking tool, not just a format:
- Issue → What is the real legal question being asked?
- Rule → What principle or case actually answers that question?
- Application → Where most marks are—applying the rule directly
to the facts
- Conclusion → Clear, concise answer (not a rewrite of everything
above)

Once I got comfortable with this, my answers became a lot clearer and more efficient.

One of the biggest issues I see with NCA students is spending way too much time reading cases without actually pulling out what matters for exams.

When I was going through the process, things got a lot easier once I started breaking cases down into a simple, repeatable structure:
- What are the key facts (only what actually matters)?
- What’s the legal issue?
- What rule/principle is the court applying?
- How is that rule applied to the facts?
- What’s the takeaway you can reuse on an exam?

It sounds basic, but most people either overcomplicate it or miss the exam-focused takeaway.
