Escalating Tariffs, Rising Local Needs

Canada has matched the U.S. dollar-for-dollar, doubling its own tariffs on American steel and aluminum to 50% in response to Trump's tariff policy.

For Sault Ste. Marie, this trade war isn't background noise. It has already cost Algoma Steel workers their jobs, and the ripple effects keep spreading, with media reports of significantly higher demand at local food banks like St. Vincent Place.

Other local organizations like the Soup Kitchen Community Centre have compared the impact to a wave moving through the whole community. Our team has been involved with St. Vincent Place for years and we will continue to support them and the community-at-large.

If you know of other organizations stepping up right now, tag them below for visibility.

Three Years On, We Remember October 7

Three years ago today, Hamas terrorists attacked communities in southern Israel, killing civilians and taking hostages.

We remember the lives lost, and we grieve with their families. Among them was Canadian-Israeli peace activist Vivian Silver, who regularly drove Gazans to hospitals in Israel for medical care.

We stand with the members of the Jewish community in Algoma as we remember.

Serving Up Support, Three Years Running

For the third year in a row, Broadbent Law is proud to sponsor Ashlyn Pilkington, who plays for the Sault Ignite Flare U16 volleyball team.

Supporting Ashlyn as she trains, competes, and grows as an athlete is exactly the kind of community involvement we believe in: support that shows up, season after season.

We're proud to be in her corner.

What local athlete are you cheering on this year?

Yesterday, members of our team joined the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ceremony at Algoma University.

We went to listen.

Residential school survivor John Saylors opened with a prayer: "Don't forget them, pray with them. Be thankful, just keep on marching forward, don't look back."

An orange shirt is a small part of the work. The rest is listening, learning, and showing up every day, ready to do our part in the work of reconciliation.

Every child matters.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we remember that this day began over a decade earlier, as Orange Shirt Day — created in 2013 after residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad shared her story of a new orange shirt, gifted by her grandmother, taken from her on her first day at a residential school.

This year, we're inviting our neighbours across Northern Ontario to join us in a simple gesture: Buy the T-shirt through the link in the comments.

Every child matters.

If you have a photo from a previous Orange Shirt Day, we'd love to see it — tag us. Or tell us in the comments: what reconciliation story moved you the most today?

Our own Jeff Broadbent was recently a guest of honour at the IASSM Soccer Tournament — three days of seven-a-side soccer bringing neighbours of every background together on the same field.

Jeff was humbled by the invitation, and we're glad he had a chance to join in the kind of community initiatives that bring the Soo closer together.

Lumber & Tariffs: Is $17.3M Enough?

Canada got slapped with 45% tariffs on softwood lumber by the Trump administration. That's 3 times higher than Sweden, capped at 15% under the same U.S. rules.

Ontario just announced $17.3M to help four Northern Ontario forestry projects survive this madness — including Interfor's Elk Lake mill, a sister mill to the wood plant right here in Sault Ste. Marie.

The funding is expected to protect over 320 jobs. It's a good start, but Ontario could move faster to get ahead of layoffs.

What would actually help you?

The team at Broadbent Law regularly prepares meals at St. Vincent Place for those experiencing food insecurity. Today’s menu was made with plenty of care (and plenty of food!): 600 meatballs and marinara sauce made from 38 pounds of beef, loads of crushed tomatoes and seasoning, 150 sub buns, heaps of coleslaw, and fresh Ontario grapes for dessert. 🍇

All made with care and compassion, and hours of meaningful time together for the pricelessly rewarding joy of knowing we’re helping others.

For our next menu, post your comment about what you think we should make!
