With summer sports starting just around the corner ⚽️🎨 - a lot of parents start thinking about registration.

One detail that needs to be discussed in separation agreements:

👉 Extracurricular activities.

It sounds straightforward… until real life kicks in.

• Who decides what the child is enrolled in?
• Do both parents have to agree - or just be informed?
• What counts as a “reasonable” activity?
• How are costs shared (especially if one parent earns more)?
• What if an activity falls on the other parent’s time?
• What happens if one parent signs the child up without asking?

I’ve seen a lot of tension build over something that’s supposed to be fun for the child.

A strong agreement doesn’t just say “we’ll figure it out” - it sets out how decisions are made, how costs are handled, and what happens if you don’t agree.

If you’re working through a separation or updating your agreement, this is one of those areas that’s worth getting really clear on before it becomes an issue 🤍

🌿 Creating a clear parenting plan can make things so much easier for everyone involved, especially your kids.

When putting together a parenting plan, here are a few important things to consider:

→ A regular parenting schedule that keeps things consistent
→ Communication: how and when you’ll talk about the kids
→ Pick-up and drop-off arrangements
→ How you’ll handle changes or unexpected situations
→ Introducing new partners
→ What happens as your child grows and their needs change

No plan has to be perfect, but having one in place can reduce conflict, provide stability, and help both parents stay on the same page.

Neville Mediation can help you create a plan that works for your unique family.

If you have questions about the process, we're always happy to chat.

🌿 Trying to figure out whether mediation is the right path forward for your situation? Here are a few key signs to help you decide:

1. You want control over the outcome
If having a say in what your agreement looks like matters to you, mediation gives you the ability to decide the outcome of your own life.

2. You want to keep things as low-conflict as possible
If you’d prefer a calmer, more respectful approach (instead of a back-and-forth battle), mediation focuses on problem-solving, not winning.

3. You’re looking for a cost-effective option
If avoiding high legal fees is important, mediation is often a more affordable way to reach an agreement.

A good rule of thumb: if things are relatively workable and you’re both open to finding solutions, mediation is worth considering.

🌿 Here is part two of practical tips to help improve communication during difficult conversations.

When emotions run high, it’s easy for discussions to become unproductive. These small but intentional communication shifts can help keep conversations respectful, focused, and solution-oriented.

The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s creating enough safety and understanding to move forward.

🌿 Let’s talk about flexible thinking - one of the most important skills in mediation (and in life!)

Flexible thinking is the ability to see situations from more than one angle, consider new information, and shift our approach when needed. It doesn’t mean abandoning your needs or minimizing your feelings, it just means staying open to possibilities.

In mediation, flexible thinking can help you:

✨ Move from “my way vs. your way” to “what solution works for everyone?”
✨ See the difference between intentions and impact.
✨ Reduce defensiveness and increase collaboration.
✨ Create space for creative problem-solving.

Some tips include:

✅ Separate the person from the problem: Shift from “They’re being difficult” to “We’re both trying to meet different needs.”
✅ Be open to adjusting your expectations: Rigidity fuels conflict. Small mindset shifts can create big breakthroughs.
✅ Let go of needing to be right: Focus on solutions that feel fair and sustainable instead of proving a point.

When both people can soften rigid positions, even a little, it opens the door for more understanding, less conflict, and better long-term outcomes, especially when children are involved.

Mediation is about finding a path forward that feels respectful, and sustainable.
And flexible thinking is a powerful tool to help get there. 💛
