📉 Bank of Canada Cuts Rates Again Amid Economic Uncertainty 📉

The Bank of Canada has lowered its policy rate by 25 basis points to 3%, marking its sixth consecutive cut since June. With inflation steady around 2%, the central bank says lower rates are supporting household spending and could help strengthen the economy.

This rate cut is particularly significant for real estate investors, as many have been waiting for interest rates to hit 3%—a level not seen since March 2022. Lower borrowing costs could reignite housing market activity, making it more affordable for investors to finance new properties and for buyers to re-enter the market.

However, uncertainty remains high as the U.S. considers imposing 25% tariffs on Canadian imports as early as February. The Bank of Canada has revised its GDP growth forecast to 1.8% for 2025 and 2026, factoring in slower population growth and reduced business investment due to policy uncertainty.

Governor Tiff Macklem emphasized that while tariffs were not a factor in this rate cut, a prolonged trade conflict could significantly impact Canada’s economy. A Bank of Canada model suggests that if Canada and the U.S. both impose 25% tariffs, GDP could shrink by 2.5% in the first year, potentially leading to a recession. The bank also warns that tariffs could cause higher inflation, weaker exports, job losses, and a depreciating Canadian dollar.

Macklem stressed that monetary policy cannot fully offset the effects of a trade war, but the central bank will focus on helping the economy adjust. For now, with inflation near its target, the Bank of Canada remains in a strong position to provide stability.
