The City of St. Catharines is declaring a significant weather event following the impacts of substantial rainfall from last night’s overnight storm.

The City is responding to significant flooding across the St. Catharines following the torrential storm that saw an exceptionally intense rainfall of 138.75 mm. By declaring a significant weather event, the City is notifying the public that weather conditions may prevent it from meeting its normal maintenance standards.

Residents who are dealing with the impacts of flooding following the overnight storm can use public washrooms and showers at the St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre. Bottled water is also available for residents who require assistance.

Washrooms are available during regular business hours at other City facilities as well, including Port Weller Community Centre, St. Catharines City Hall, the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre and the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre.

TRAIL UPGRADES | If you're heading out on Welland's trails over the next month, you may notice crews working at some trail entrances as the City completes upgrades to improve safety.

Beginning July 27, work will start in the south end of the city and move north over approximately one month. The project includes replacing the protective posts at trail entrances, repairing small sections of asphalt, and adding fresh line markings to create safer, more accessible trail entrances. This work supports ongoing improvements that make it easier and safer for people to enjoy walking and cycling throughout our community.

Trail heads at the following locations will be affected during construction:
🔹 Forks Road
🔹 South Niagara Rowing Club and Canal Bank
🔹 Welland International Flatwater Centre
🔹 Ontario Road
🔹 Lincoln Street
🔹 Division Street and Merritt Park
🔹 Merritt Street
🔹 19 Chippawa and Thorold Road Boathouse
🔹 Prince Charles Drive North

Please use caution when travelling through active work areas, follow all posted signs and traffic controls, and watch for crews and equipment.

Roads will remain open throughout the project. Only trail heads at these locations will be temporarily affected.

Last night’s storm has caused flooding and washout conditions in areas of the City's parks and trail systems, creating unsafe conditions for public use.

City sports fields are closed today. Trails across St. Catharines are also temporarily closed until further notice due to flooding and water damage from the storm.

We strongly urge residents to stay clear of creeks, rivers, and watercourses due to slippery banks and elevated water levels. Residents should also avoid areas in City parks and along trails with standing water, flooding, or erosion until crews can assess conditions and make repairs.
