Recent governance challenges faced by several Canadian regulatory bodies and not-for-profits serve as an important reminder that good governance cannot be treated as an administrative exercise. It is fundamental to fulfilling an organization's mandate and maintaining public trust.

In this article, Victoria Rees, KC, Counsel in our Halifax office, discusses why governance matters, the standards Boards should be guided by, and the practical measures organizations can implement to support transparency, accountability, and effective decision-making.

The recent decision in Lowe Estate v. Nova Scotia (Department of Opportunities and Social Development), 2026 NSCA 61, is a significant one. In finding for the appellant, a person living in his tent, and who had sought assistance on the basis that it met the requirements of being ‘accommodation’, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal provided important guidance on the application of the reasonableness standard and the interpretation of section 49 of the Employment Support and Income Assistance Regulations, with implications for future requests and eligibility for Enhanced Rate assistance.

Pink Larkin lawyers Vince Calderhead and George Franklin were proud to represent the appellant, the Estate of Bradley Lowe, on a pro bono basis throughout these proceedings.

Prince Edward Island's new Employment Standards Act represents a significant update to the province's employment standards framework. As organizations and employees consider these changes, now is a good time to review existing contracts, policies, and internal processes to identify potential gaps and ensure ongoing compliance.

In our latest article, by Andy Nielsen and Harshini Arumugam, we provide an overview of the new legislation and key considerations for employers, employees and unions.

What happens when language rights are repeatedly ignored?

In a precedent-setting language rights case in New Brunswick, the Court of King's Bench awarded damages to a citizen whose right to receive services in French was repeatedly violated by a public health institution.

The decision in Ouellet v. Horizon Health Network reinforces a critical principle: rights protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms carry real consequences when breached. It also serves as an important reminder that the duty to communicate and provide services in both official languages extends to all members of the public - not only those receiving direct government services.

Pink Larkin is marking Pride this year with donations to two local non-profit organizations that support 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and young adults: the Youth Project in Nova Scotia and Imprint Youth Association in New Brunswick. Both organizations are doing essential work to confront the impacts of anti-trans and anti-q***r movements on young people, and to create safe and affirming spaces.

Pink Larkin is also proud to sponsor the 2026 Prisme Conference in Halifax this July, “Unity in Law: Shaping the Future of 2SLGBTQ+ Rights”.

We wish our 2SLGBTQIA+ colleagues, clients, and community members a safe, joyful, and meaningful Pride.

Pink Larkin has been recognized again in Canadian Lawyer’s 5-Star Pro Bono Firms report, alongside firms across the country working to make legal support more accessible and to strengthen the justice system for those who need it most.

This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to advancing access to justice, with a focus on work that addresses systemic barriers and creates broader impact.

This work is led by Vince Calderhead, whose practice is dedicated to cases that challenge laws, policies, and entrenched practices affecting low-income individuals at scale.

“When you’re challenging a law that affects hundreds or thousands of people, the systemic impact is almost self-evident.”

Almost 10 years after writing about what it means to “look professional” as a young q***r “almost-lawyer”, Jaime Burnet, lawyer in our Halifax office, considers a deeper question: can you be a lawyer and be your full q***r self at work?

In this new article, Jaime shares a candid, personal perspective on the reality of being q***r in the workplace today in the context of a growing anti-trans, anti-q***r global movement. She writes that we should be pushing for the ability of people from all equity-deserving groups to safely be their full selves in their workplaces, schools, and communities.

As we look ahead to the 2026 Prisme Conference in Halifax this July, “Unity in Law: Shaping the Future of 2SLGBTQ+ Rights”, we’re glad to see these conversations continuing, and more people sharing their perspectives and experiences.
