What is the difference between what was designed and what was actually constructed?

That is one of the questions as-built surveying can help document.

These photographs are from recent as-built fieldwork completed by Geo Vision Surveying Inc in Toronto.

Using Spectra surveying technology, we collected measurements representing actual field conditions so the project team could have dependable information for its records and review.

Urban survey work also requires careful equipment positioning and awareness of traffic, pedestrians, existing infrastructure and limited working space.

How do you document a complex site efficiently when traditional point-by-point measurements may not tell the whole story?

LiDAR gives surveyors another powerful method of collecting detailed existing-condition information.

The equipment shown here includes our GreenValley LiGrip O2 SLAM LiDAR scanner together with another mobile LiDAR configuration designed for efficient data collection.

Rather than observing only individual points, LiDAR can capture large amounts of three-dimensional information from the surrounding environment.

Depending on the project, this can be useful for documenting complex sites, existing structures, construction areas and other environments where comprehensive reality capture adds value.

The technology is impressive, but the important part is knowing when to use it, how to establish an appropriate workflow, and how the resulting information will support the project.

Cambridge — Grading Survey + Building Foundation Layout

Real-world problem solving under difficult site conditions

Construction sites rarely give you perfect working conditions.

This Cambridge project is a good example.

Our work included a grading survey and building foundation layout after excavation had already taken place. Water had accumulated across sections of the excavation, making access and placement of layout points more difficult.

Despite the conditions, the construction team still needed dependable information showing the location of the proposed foundation and the required grades.

The job required careful use of survey control, accurate elevation work and practical positioning of stakes so they could remain useful to the contractor.

You can see some of those stakes standing directly in the wet excavation.

This is one of the realities of construction surveying: conditions change, but the information provided still has to be dependable.

Hamilton — Topographic Survey

Topographic surveying is often about working with the site exactly as you find it.

On this Hamilton project, existing buildings, landscaping, fences and vegetation were all part of the conditions that needed to be considered during the fieldwork.

Unlike an open site, developed properties often require more careful instrument positioning and movement around obstacles to ensure that the necessary elevations and visible features are captured.

Using Trimble surveying equipment, we collected the field information needed to create an accurate picture of the existing conditions.

The finished survey may look clean and organized, but behind it is careful field planning and a lot of individual observations.

From layout points to a bridge taking shape.

This Brantford bridge project has progressed significantly, and it is rewarding to see the structure now at an advanced stage of construction.

Construction surveying does not always end after the first layout. As a project develops, surveyors may return to establish additional points, verify positions and elevations, and provide information needed for subsequent stages of the work.

Using Trimble surveying technology, Geo Vision Surveying Inc continues to support this project as the construction team moves toward completion.

Projects like this are a good reminder that surveying is present throughout much more of the construction process than many people realize.

Construction plans show what is intended to be built. An as-built survey records the position and elevation of what was actually constructed.

These images show as-built survey work completed on a bridge project in Brantford using Trimble surveying technology.

The observations help document constructed conditions and provide information that the project team can compare with the design requirements.

As-built surveys may be used to:

Preparing new SLAM LiDAR technology for scanning work in Hamilton

Surveying technology continues to expand the ways existing conditions can be documented.

These photos show our GreenValley LiGrip O2 being assembled and prepared for an upcoming scanning project in Hamilton.

A handheld SLAM LiDAR scanner is designed to collect three-dimensional information as the operator moves through an environment. This can provide a detailed digital record of visible surfaces and spaces that can later be reviewed and processed as point-cloud information.

Before any scanning begins, however, the equipment must be correctly assembled, checked and incorporated into a carefully planned field workflow.

We are looking forward to putting this system to work and sharing more about how the captured information can support our surveying and mapping services.

Why would a surveyor use both GPS and a robotic total station on the same project?

Different areas of a site may require different measurement methods.

During this topographic survey in Sheffield, we used a GPS system together with a Spectra robotic total station.

GPS is useful for efficiently collecting information where satellite reception and site conditions are suitable. The robotic total station provides another method for observing detailed features and elevations where line-of-sight measurement is more appropriate.

Using the right equipment for each part of the site allows us to build a more complete and dependable record of the existing conditions.

Good surveying is not about using one instrument for everything. It is about selecting the appropriate method for the conditions and the information the project requires.
