In Canada, emergencies are managed first at the local level: hospitals, fire departments, police and municipalities. If they need assistance, they request it from their province or territory. Effective emergency response to large-scale events depends on coordination between federal departments, partners, and jurisdictions. The Government Operations Centre (GOC) brings together federal departments and agencies and works closely with provinces, territories, and other partners to coordinate an integrated federal response. There's still colour to be found in the garden, thanks to the September Plant of the Month: Showy Stonecrop 🌸

This fire-resistant perennial succulent is a late-season bloomer, bringing clusters of pink flowers when other plants are fading. Its thick, water-storing leaves and stems make it harder to ignite, a good fit for the intermediate zone. Bees, birds, and butterflies are drawn to the nectar, while deer and rabbits tend to leave the rubbery foliage alone.

Showy stonecrop grows 30 to 60 cm tall depending on the cultivar, does well in poor soils, and is extremely cold-hardy, though it will not tolerate standing water. It is a good choice for a hot, sunny, xeriscape garden.
