A medium-term investor hopes that the stocks of the companies in which he has invested will rise by 10-20-30% within a few months, and he can sell them safely, locking in his profit. He buys on the downside and sells when the stock peaks, and may do this several times with the same stock over the course of a year. Thus, he has to follow the market more often, but he can also make more profit than an investor who invests infrequently and for a long period of time.
