Some so-called “legal practitioners” have contributed to making the UK asylum system more difficult. They profit financially, yet in doing so often harm genuine applicants. The sums they extract can be astonishing, and despite this, many cases handled by them do not succeed. Vulnerable individuals, having little choice, hand over their hard-earned money.

A number of these individuals are not even licensed professionals. Others operate under the shadow of authorised lawyers, mismanaging cases or pursuing the wrong grounds, ultimately damaging lives. These concerns have been raised repeatedly in the media, with warnings issued—but too often they go unheeded.

There has also been significant misuse in areas such as work permits and student visas, with opportunities undermined by some self-styled advisers and consultants. Among them are individuals from various backgrounds, including Indian, Bangladeshi, Nigerian, and Pakistani communities.
