De Facto Rights in Victoria

Many people are surprised to learn that de facto couples in Victoria have similar rights to married couples under family law.

You may be considered de facto if:
You lived together on a genuine domestic basis for at least 2 years,
You have a child together, or
One party made significant contributions

If the relationship breaks down, you may be entitled to:
A property settlement
Spousal maintenance

Just like married couples, strict time limits apply (generally 2 years from separation).

If you’re unsure whether your relationship qualifies, contact Alyssa and Hannah to organise a consult.

Daffodil Day | Supporting a Future Without Cancer

Today, we recognise Daffodil Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness, supporting cancer research and showing solidarity with everyone impacted by cancer.

Cancer affects so many lives, whether through personal experiences, family, friends or members of our community. Daffodil Day is a reminder of the importance of hope, support and continued investment into finding better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

At Spectrum Lawyers, we believe in supporting the communities we are part of and recognising the causes that bring people together.

Today we remember those we have lost, stand beside those currently facing cancer, celebrate survivors and acknowledge the incredible work being done to create a brighter future.

Every contribution, conversation and act of support helps make a difference.

A strong building contract is the foundation of a successful construction project.
With Victoria’s building and construction industry continuing to experience regulatory change, outdated or unclear contracts can expose builders, contractors, developers and property owners to unnecessary risk.

A well-drafted construction contract should clearly address:
Scope of works and project requirements
Payment terms and obligations
Variations and additional works
Delays, extensions of time and completion dates
Dispute resolution processes

Whether you are commencing a new
project, reviewing existing agreements, or facing a contractual dispute, having the right legal advice early can help prevent costly issues later.

At Spectrum Lawyers, we provide practical legal advice across all stages of construction projects from contract reviews and negotiations through to dispute resolution and litigation.

Planning a construction project or need advice about your building contract? Contact Spectrum Lawyers today and protect your position from the start.

The legal profession is built on problem-solving, advocacy and supporting others, but behind every legal professional is a person who also needs support, balance and time to recharge.

The demands of legal work can be significant, with deadlines, complex matters and the responsibility of helping clients through some of their most challenging moments.

That’s why prioritising wellbeing is so important.

A healthy legal workplace recognises that wellbeing is not just about managing stress, it’s about creating an environment where people can thrive.

At Spectrum Lawyers, we believe in supporting our team through:
Taking time to reset and recharge
Building strong workplace connections
Encouraging open conversations around wellbeing
Creating balance between professional commitments and personal life

Because when our people feel supported, they are better equipped to support our clients.

This Wisdom Wednesday, remember: looking after yourself is not a distraction from your work, it is an investment in the work you do.

Building Variations: A Small Change Can Lead to a Big Dispute

Changes during a building project are common, but if they're not handled correctly, they can quickly become costly legal disputes.

Under Victoria's domestic building laws, every variation should be clearly documented, priced, and signed before any work begins. Failing to follow the correct process could leave builders unable to recover payment and owners facing unnecessary conflict.

With significant changes to variation laws taking effect from 1 December 2026, it's more important than ever for both builders and homeowners to understand their rights and obligations.

Read our latest article to learn how to protect yourself, avoid costly mistakes, and stay compliant throughout your building project.

Need advice about a building variation or domestic building dispute? Contact the team at Spectrum Lawyers today. We're here to help both builders and homeowners achieve the best possible outcome.

When faced with a dispute in construction, partnerships or a commercial dealing, it is important to remember that today’s dispute can involve tomorrow’s opportunity.

Litigation often escalates conflict.

Mediation creates space for:
Real conversations
Commercial compromise
Preserving working relationships

Sometimes the smartest move isn’t to burn the bridge… it’s to rebuild it differently.

Why Your Standard Terms Need Regular Attention

Many builders rely on standard terms and conditions, but as your business evolves, those documents can quickly fall out of step with your processes, change in the law and best practice.

Over time, this can lead to gaps between:
The way your business actually operates
The risks you’re exposed to
What your contracts actually say

Your terms and conditions should be a practical business tool, not just a legal formality. Regularly reviewing and updating them ensures they continue to support your commercial objectives rather than undermine them.

Contact Hannah today and see how she can assist you.
