Today is a reminder that a simple question can open the door to an important conversation: “Are you okay?”

For First Nations people, connection, culture, community and feeling heard can make a real difference. Sometimes, asking the question is just the beginning—what matters is being there to listen, support, and connect someone with the right help.

AFLSQ is here to support First Nations people through more than just legal services. We also provide free counselling services for First Nations individuals, as well as our Indigenous Men’s Program, Bamba Mari, which provides culturally safe support, connection, and a space to yarn.

You don’t have to face things alone.

When checking in with others today, take the time to genuinely listen. And if you’re the one who needs support, remember that reaching out is a sign of strength.

Wunya 2026 || Day 1

AFLSQ staff members, Dionne and Ainsley are currently in Meanjin/ Brisbane for the annual Wunya First Nations employee networking event.

‘Wunya’ is a Yuggera word meaning greetings or welcome. This event is a collaborative gathering that celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, strengthens connections with communities across Queensland, and creates a space for cultural self-care. It also provides an opportunity to yarn, share experiences, and exchange ideas about the work, challenges, and opportunities within the community legal sector.

Child Protection Week: 6 – 12 September 2026 || Every child deserves to feel safe, connected, and heard.

As Child Protection Week begins, we recognise the importance of protecting children and supporting families to thrive.

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, safety is deeply connected to culture, family, community, identity, and connection to Country.

At AFLSQ, we believe children and families deserve culturally safe, respectful, and informed legal support. We walk alongside families navigating the Child Protection system and advocate for outcomes that prioritise the safety, wellbeing, identity, and cultural connections of every child.

This Child Protection Week, let’s listen to children, strengthen families, support communities, and work together to create a future where every child can grow up safe, strong, and connected.

Protecting children is everyone’s responsibility.

Today, AFLSQ was honoured to participate in a Smoking Ceremony to cleanse our workplace and our employees and to acknowledge the enduring connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

This meaningful ceremony provided an opportunity to reflect, renew, and strengthen our shared commitment to creating a culturally safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for our staff, clients, and community.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live and work, and to Charlie Waters who led today's ceremony, sharing his knowledge, culture, and generosity with us. We are grateful for the opportunity to walk together in the spirit of respect, healing, and reconciliation.

Today we celebrated a very special milestone for one of our amazing AFLSQ solicitors—the big 3-0! Jayde is now fondly looking forward to retirement in her newfound “old” age!

While her actual birthday is on Friday, she doesn't work Fridays, so we made sure to celebrate a little early with the team today.

Jayde, thank you for all that you do for our clients, colleagues, and community. Your dedication and positive spirit make AFLSQ a better place every day.

Mabo Day || 3 June 2026

Today, we commemorate Mabo Day and honour the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose determination and advocacy helped transform Australia’s legal landscape.

Mabo Day marks the anniversary of the landmark High Court of Australia’s, Mabo Decision, which recognised the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to their traditional lands and waters. This important decision overturned Australia’s previous legal fiction of terra nullius (land belonging to no one).

AFLSQ acknowledges the strength, resilience, and enduring connection that First Nations peoples have to Country, culture, and community. We recognise the significance of this decision in advancing justice, and the ongoing work required to uphold and protect the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Today, we reflect on the courage of those who fought for recognition, celebrate the achievements made, and recommit ourselves to supporting self-determination, truth-telling, and equitable access to justice.
