We’re thrilled to officially launch our newly redesigned International Students website!

Our mission was to build a platform that’s not only more accessible and engaging, but also culturally relevant—designed to help students navigate the complex legal landscape of studying in Australia.

A huge thank you to Judy Kuo for her incredible original illustrations, and to Kushla Ross from Studio Cahoots for developing vibrant, legal self-help resources that make our content more approachable and inclusive.

Redfern Legal Centre's International Student Legal Service NSW (ISLS) recently met with Professor Tomoya Obokata, the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, during his visit to Australia.

The meeting focused on the challenges faced by international students, including:

Debt bo***ge and labour exploitation disguised as educational opportunities.

Coercive and unsafe working conditions, with limited awareness of rights.

Vulnerabilities worsened by visa conditions and economic pressures, leading to abuse and exploitation.

ISLS emphasised the urgent need for systemic change, stronger protections, and culturally tailored support.

Professor Obokata’s visit highlighted the importance of collaboration and advocacy. ISLS looks forward to his final report and recommendations.

Together, we can work towards a future free from exploitation and slavery.
