📢 STUDENT VISA CHANGES — EFFECTIVE TODAY, 2 OCTOBER 2026 🇦🇺

Important changes to Australia’s Student visa rules have commenced today and may affect your study and family plans.

🎓 Applying for another Student visa?
New rules restrict when you can apply for a further Student visa while in Australia. Certain applicants must apply from outside Australia, unless an exception applies.

👨‍👩‍👧 Including your family?
Partners and dependent children can only be included in a Student visa application where an exemption applies. Separate applications for family members to join after the Student visa has been granted are no longer available.

✈️ Where must you be when the visa is granted?
Certain applicants required to apply from outside Australia must also be outside Australia when their visa is granted.

📌 Your current Student visa is not affected.
📌 Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 will continue to be assessed under the previous rules.

These amendments apply to applications lodged on or after 2 October 2026. Exceptions and transitional arrangements may apply, so check your individual circumstances before enrolling in further study or making travel plans.

🇦🇺 IMPORTANT AUSTRALIAN MIGRATION UPDATE – 17 SEPTEMBER 2026

The Australian Government has today announced a number of significant changes to the migration program, affecting Visitor, Student, Graduate, Working Holiday Maker and Skilled visas.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke outlined the reforms during an address to the National Press Club, as part of the Government’s strategy to reduce Net Overseas Migration and strengthen the integrity of Australia’s migration system.

🔹 VISITOR VISAS – NO FURTHER STAY CONDITION

One of the most significant announcements is that future Visitor visa grants will be subject to a “No Further Stay” condition, which will generally prevent visa holders from applying for another substantive visa while in Australia.

Importantly, according to the announcement:

✅ Visitor visas already granted will not be affected; and
✅ People already in Australia holding a Visitor visa will not be affected.

This could have a significant impact on people who were planning to enter Australia as visitors and subsequently lodge another visa application onshore, including certain Partner visa applicants.

🔹 STUDENT & GRADUATE VISAS

Changes have also been announced regarding secondary applicants.

Most Student and Graduate visa holders will no longer be able to include or subsequently bring secondary applicants under the proposed arrangements.

Exceptions are expected to apply in certain circumstances, including for:

• Students from Pacific and ASEAN nations; and
• Postgraduate study, including PhD programs.

Changes are also planned around course transfers, particularly where students seek to transfer to lower-level providers.

🔹 WORKING HOLIDAY MAKER VISAS – NEW BALLOT SYSTEM

A ballot system is to be introduced for second and third Working Holiday Maker visas.

The announced caps are:

• Second-year visas – 45,000 places
• Third-year visas – 5,000 places

Existing specified/regional work requirements are expected to continue to apply.

🔹 SKILLED MIGRATION – NEW POINTS TEST

The Government has announced that a new Points Test will be introduced.

Greater recognition is expected to be given to qualifications and skills in areas of workforce demand, particularly housing and construction trades.

Certain high-demand trade qualifications are expected to receive points broadly comparable with university qualifications.

Changes to skilled visa processing priorities have also been announced, including greater priority for areas such as agriculture and resources/fisheries, alongside existing priority sectors.

🔹 VISA OVERSTAYERS & COMPLIANCE

The Government has also announced stronger compliance and enforcement measures targeting visa overstayers.

Additional compliance officers and detention capacity are expected to be introduced as part of these measures.

⚠️ PLEASE NOTE

These announcements were made on 17 September 2026. Further legislative instruments, regulations, Ministerial Directions, commencement dates and detailed Departmental guidance will be important in determining exactly how some of these changes will operate.

Do not cancel, lodge or change a visa application solely on the basis of today’s announcement without first checking how the changes apply to your individual circumstances.

⏳ Visa Processing Times Updated – What Does This Mean for You?

One of the questions I'm asked most often is:
"How long will my visa take?" 🤔

The Department of Home Affairs has released its latest median visa processing times (May 2026). While these timeframes are only a guide, they can help you understand what to expect.

📌 Current median processing times:
🇦🇺 Skilled (Permanent) – 9 months
💑 Partner (Provisional/Temporary) – 20 months
👷 Skilled (Temporary) – 70 days
🎓 Student – 19 days
✈️ Visitor – Less than 1 day
Please note that some Visitor (Subclass 600) visa applications may take longer depending on individual circumstances.
🌏 Working Holiday – Less than 1 day

💡 A few important things to remember:
✔️ These are median processing times, not guaranteed processing times.
✔️ Every application is assessed on its own individual circumstances.
✔️ Lodging a complete application with all required supporting documents may help avoid unnecessary delays.
✔️ Some visa applications receive priority under current government processing directions.

💔 Partner Visa Application Fee Has Increased

Planning to apply for an Australian Partner Visa?

From 1 July 2026, the Department of Home Affairs has increased the application fee for Partner Visas.

💰 Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801 or 309/100)

Was: $9,365
➡️ Now: $11,710

That's an increase of $2,345 for the primary applicant.

If you're considering lodging a Partner Visa application, it's important to factor this increase into your budget. While the government fees have gone up, the eligibility requirements remain the same—so ensuring your application is decision-ready from the outset is more important than ever.

📢 Important Update: Skilled Visa Fees & Salary Thresholds Have Increased from 1 July 2026

If you're an employer planning to sponsor overseas workers, or you're preparing to lodge an employer-sponsored visa application, there are some important changes you need to be aware of.

💰 New Salary Thresholds
From 1 July 2026, the minimum salary thresholds have increased:

✅ Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT)
$76,515 ➡️ $79,423
(Applies to Subclass 482 Core Skills and Subclass 186 nominations)

✅ Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT)
$141,210 ➡️ $146,576
(Applies to Subclass 482 Specialist Skills nominations)

✅ Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT)
$76,515 ➡️ $79,423
(Applies to Subclass 494 and Subclass 187 nominations)

There have also been increases to:
• Fair Work High Income Threshold: $183,100 ➡️ $190,100
• National Minimum Wage: $1,004.90 per week ($26.44 per hour)

💳 Visa Application Charges Have Also Increased

Some of the most common employer-sponsored visas now cost:

🔹 Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand)
$3,210 ➡️ $4,015

🔹 Subclass 494 (Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional)
$4,910 ➡️ $6,140

🔹 Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme)
$4,910 ➡️ $6,140

🔹 Subclass 400 (Temporary Work – Short Stay Specialist)
$430 ➡️ $535

🔹 Subclass 407 (Training Visa)
$430 ➡️ $535

Dependant visa charges have also increased.

📌 What does this mean for employers?

If you're planning to sponsor an employee, make sure:
✔️ The salary being offered meets the new minimum threshold.
✔️ You budget for the updated Department of Home Affairs fees.
✔️ Any nominations or visa applications lodged from 1 July 2026 comply with the new requirements.

A salary that met the requirements in June may no longer meet the threshold today.

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR EMPLOYER SPONSORS

If your business is planning to sponsor overseas workers in the next financial year, now is the time to review your salary budgets and recruitment plans.

From 1 July 2026, the Australian Government will increase the income thresholds for employer-sponsored visas:

🔹 Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT): Increasing from $76,515 to $79,499

🔹 Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT): Increasing from $141,210 to $146,717

These new thresholds will apply to relevant Subclass 482 Skills in Demand and Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme applications lodged on or after 1 July 2026.

⚠️ Why does this matter?

If the guaranteed annual earnings offered to a sponsored employee fall below the applicable threshold at the time of lodgement, the nomination will not meet the visa requirements.

This increase may impact:

✅ Workforce planning
✅ Salary and remuneration budgets
✅ Upcoming sponsorship applications
✅ Timing of visa lodgements
✅ Long-term recruitment strategies

For employers considering sponsoring overseas workers, now is a good time to review any planned nominations and determine whether applications should be lodged before the new thresholds take effect.
