There has been commentary recently from a member of the community and former Councillor regarding the number of South Perth Tree Canopy Advocates (SPTCA) members who are now Councillors at the City of South Perth.

To set the record straight and clarify information that may not have been previously clear or accurate:

𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗲𝘀 and 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘄𝘆𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 are co-founders of the South Perth Tree Canopy Advocates and are serving as Councillors.

Apart from these co-founders, no other Councillors have any role or affiliation with SPTCA.

It is also important to correct inaccurate information circulated in an SPTCA post and email in September 2025.

𝗖𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗱 is not affiliated with the SPTCA.

Her assessment of the proposal at Collier Reserve was undertaken in her personal capacity and was limited to reviewing the Definitive Feasibility Study Capital Estimate and project lifecycle processes, drawing on her engineering expertise.

It was not related to trees or tree advocacy.

𝗖𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹 is not affiliated with the SPTCA.

SPTCA apologises for any misunderstanding or concern the previous statements, made without consultation or consent, may have caused.

Support for urban tree canopy is a legitimate position that reflects the importance many residents place on trees and urban greening. Such support does not prevent Councillors from making independent and impartial decisions in the interests of the broader community, in accordance with the oath they took upon being sworn into office.

The City's 2025 Community Survey identified trees and urban greening as high priorities for the community. It should therefore come as no surprise that Councillors take these matters seriously, as they reflect the priorities and expectations of many residents across the City.

Public discussion is important and welcome, but it should be based on accurate information. We encourage everyone to verify facts before drawing conclusions about the motivations, affiliations, or decision-making of elected representatives.

WHO DECIDED HOUSES CAN'T HAVE TREES?! 🌳🏡

Why are we pretending the choice is between apartments and treeless housing estates?

Other cities manage to build houses AND keep trees. Why can't Perth?

It's encouraging to see major developers finally engaging in this debate and Paul Blackburne Blackburne Developments calling treeless estates a “disgrace”.

We need more homes AND more trees. Good planning should deliver both.✅

Minister Carey, John Carey MLA Office - Member for Perth enough incentives. Change the subdivision rules. Make retaining mature trees a REQUIREMENT, not an option.

They (incorrectly) believe that tree protections designed to benefit the whole community will erode THEIR PROPERTY RIGHTS! 🤬

🚨NEWSFLASH - Perth and other WA cities are in Canopy Crisis with the lowest levels in Australia. 80% of trees are lost on private land. Tree Policies are working in 12 LGAs.

Singapore is racing to turn concrete into canopy 🌳. By 2030 the city state plans to add one million more trees, part of its OneMillionTrees movement under NParks, already past the halfway mark years ahead of schedule. The goal isn't just looks, it's survival in a tropical furnace of glass and asphalt where heat radiates off every surface long after sunset 🌡️.
Research backs the strategy. A December 2024 study in Science of the Total Environment by researchers Lei Xu and Ronita Bardhan found shaded areas with dense canopy cover cut perceived heat by up to 3 to 5 degrees. A separate NUS and ETH Zurich modeling study found tree cover in humid cities like Singapore can lower air conditioning demand by 6 to 9% ❄️. Nature, it turns out, is a surprisingly good engineer.
