🏳️‍🌈 June is Pride Month — a time to recognise and celebrate the courage, diversity and resilience of LGBTQIA+ communities.

Pride has its roots in protest. In June 1969, members of the LGBTQIA+ community resisted discrimination and police harassment during the Stonewall Uprising, an event that ignited a worldwide movement for equality and human rights that continues to this day.

At Midlas, we believe that everyone deserves access to justice. This Pride Month, we proudly stand alongside the LGBTQIA+ community and reaffirm our commitment to delivering inclusive, respectful and accessible services 🌈

Today, on National Sorry Day, we acknowledge the hurt caused to First Australians who were taken from their families as children—the Stolen Generations.

On this day in 1997, the 'Bringing Them Home Report' was presented to Parliament. The report estimated that between 10% and 33% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were separated from their families between 1910 and 1970. The report made 83 recommendations to address the harm caused by forced removal policies.

A generation later, only 5 of the 83 recommendations have been fully implemented. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are still 11x more likely to be removed from their families than other children.

Today, we honour the strength and resilience of Stolen Generations survivors and their direct descendants, who represent more than 50% of First Australians in WA. We encourage everyone to avail themselves of the opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on this sombre occasion.

Look what we spotted near our office! It's lovely to see this year's Reconciliation WA Reconciliation Week artwork on banners along Old Great Northern Highway in the heart of Midland.

This year's artwork, 'Murrunpa', has been created by Melissa Sunfly, a proud Kukatja/Ngardi woman. Melissa is committed to preserving her culture through her art, which is inspired by stories passed down by her grandfather, Sunfly Tjampitjin, and her grandmother, Bai Bai Napangarti.

'Murrunpa' depicts a law ground on Sunfly's country Murrunpa where men would traditionally meet to decide the law. The circles represent the law ground, and the dotted lines surrounding the law ground represent sand hills.

It is amazing how a simple banner can spark a moment of reflection, learning and connection.

National Reconciliation Week begins on May 27.

Yesterday (19 May), Sarah and Julia from Midlas' Legal Team took part in Law Access' Walk for Justice, standing alongside other members of the legal community to support access to justice for all Western Australians. Together, the WA legal community was able to raise $160,000 for an amazing cause.

Law Access facilitates the giving of pro bono legal assistance by the Western Australian legal profession to those who cannot afford a lawyer. In 2024-5, Law Access facilitated more than 4,300 hours of pro bono legal assistance, valued at an estimated $1.6 million.

Last Saturday (16 May), two members of our disability team, Suan and Ashleigh, attended Respect Works' inaugural Respect Walk at Ellenbrook Central. The Walk is a powerful event that champions respect, inclusion and unity within our community.

The Walk serves as a reminder of the importance of 'sonder' - understanding that every person we pass is living a life as vivid and complex as our own. When we recognise each other's experiences, challenges and stories, we build greater empathy, compassion and respect.
