📢 Big Student Visa changes start TODAY (2 October 2026) 🇦🇺
If you're an international student in Australia, or planning to study here, here's what's changed in simple terms 👇
1️⃣ Applying for a Student visa from inside Australia is now harder
Most people on a temporary visa in Australia can no longer apply for a Student visa (subclass 500) or Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) while onshore. This also applies to current Student visa holders applying for a new one, and to dependants who want to become the main student.
👉 If the new rules apply to you, you must be outside Australia both when you apply and when the visa is granted.
✅ Some students can still apply onshore, for example if you:
• Need up to 12 extra months to finish your course with the same provider
• Are applying for a PhD
• Are sponsored by DFAT or Defence
• Are doing primary or secondary school studies
• Have finished your main course and are moving to a higher-level qualification (must lead to higher education)
• Are moving from school to a non-AQF course, or from a non-AQF course to an AQF course
• Can't continue because your education provider has closed or defaulted
2️⃣ Bringing family is now limited
Most Student visa applicants can no longer include a partner or children in their application.
❌ Once your visa is granted, you can no longer add family members later. There are no exceptions to this rule.
✅ You may still include family when applying if you are:
• Studying a PhD
• Sponsored by DFAT or Defence
• On a foreign government scholarship
• An eligible student from a Pacific or ASEAN country
If your family is already on your current Student visa and you apply onshore, you may be able to keep them on the next one. Everyone must be in the same location when the application is lodged.
3️⃣ Already applied before 2 October 2026?
Good news: your application will be assessed under the old rules.
