When someone says a result meant something not just to them but to their whole family, that stays with you.

Ryan Robertson is based out of our Geelong office. He handles criminal defence matters across the Magistrates and County Court and has a reputation for being straight with his clients about where things stand and what he's doing about it.

Ken, thank you for trusting Ryan with this. It's words like yours that remind us why this work matters.

Daniel Walsh took this brief three weeks before the court date.

The client had been driving without a valid licence for three years. Then he was caught speeding, which triggered an automatic 12-month suspension on top of everything else.

Most people in this situation assume the outcome is already written.

Daniel found an issue with the licence registration that traced back years, one that created enough doubt about the validity of the infringement to take it to court. The application was filed. The magistrate took time to consider it.

Charges withdrawn.

Most people don't know that charges can be withdrawn before you even see a magistrate.

If there are weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, inconsistent witness accounts, procedural errors, insufficient proof of intent, a lawyer can raise these early. Some matters resolve at the first mention hearing.

This is why the conversation you have before court matters more than most people realise.

Court day is the day everything your lawyer prepared either holds or it doesn't.

Jaime Du Cane handled Marco's traffic matter from first brief to the result at court. Laura, Jaime's personal assistant, kept Marco informed at every step, which matters more than people realise when you're waiting on an outcome.

We're grateful for the kind words, Marco. This is exactly what we show up to do.

If you're facing a traffic matter and not sure where to start, our team is available every day from 7AM.

Broadmeadows Magistrates Court doesn't wait for you to figure things out.

The list of matters is long. The prosecutor knows the courtroom. The magistrate has seen the same story before.

Our lawyers are in that building regularly. Mario Saoud handles criminal and traffic matters out of our Broadmeadows office, and he knows how this court operates.

Mike Brown has handled fraud matters in the County Court for years. This one came with a $3 million figure and a real prospect of jail.

The client was a company director. The allegation was that he'd been syphoning money from the business over three years. The prosecution had built a case around that.

What the prosecution hadn't fully built their case around was who this man was during those years. Mike did. The medical history. The depression. The context the numbers couldn't tell.

The judge heard it. The client left without a prison sentence.
That doesn't happen by accident.

Drug trafficking charge. Three counts. Police were confident.

Ryan Robertson walked his client out with no conviction.

He's been at Dribbin & Brown's Geelong office since admission in 2016. Magistrates Court is where he spends most of his time. Bail applications, contested hearings, intervention orders; he knows the room.

Not every act of force is unlawful; Victorian law recognises self-defence when it is necessary and reasonable in the moment.

Courts assess the accused’s perception of danger alongside whether the response was proportionate under the circumstances. This defence is carefully tested under the Crimes Act 1958 and can apply across many types of charges.

Michelle Pavlica represented a client in a complicated case at the Ringwood Magistrates' Court.

The client was accused of assault, criminal damage, and breaking an intervention order multiple times. A detailed defense strategy based on self-defense and inconsistencies in the evidence was put forward, even though there were serious accusations and a history of problems. The prosecution was ultimately persuaded to withdraw the most serious charges, significantly reducing the client’s exposure. There were only a few charges left out of 37, so the person had to pay a fine instead of going to jail.
